I bought a spongebob pineapple house for my fish when I first got my tank, but I noticed that it's not very orange anymore. The colors have definitely faded and some of the paint has clearly chipped off. My fish pick on it a lot (I have platies) and it looks like they are eating at it... so I removed it from the tank.

I've seen a lot of people with the same decoration, but I thought this was supposed to be fish-friendly and durable in water (as I got it in a petstore in the fish section...) I read online that people have experienced the same problems. But my question is, is it harmful to the fish? And is there anything I can do to the pineapple to prevent any more damage to it? I wonder if they will let me return it, it was quite expensive... :/

i've had the same issue with other decorations but i don't think there's a quick fix fella.
I'm trying to find a fish friendly varnish with not much luck as i paint myself and could retouch my decorations, only thought I have is maybe coating decorations in a thin layer of CLEAR tank sealant thus providing a membrane over the paint?
hope this gives u some food for thought and let me know if you have any other ideas as i'm facing same dilema

I'll see if another lfs has some, but I haven't seen any since the fish section at my nearby pet store is quite small.. Thanks.

you should be able to find aquarium safe silicone at your local hardware store. Home Hardware in Canada carries it, but i'm not sure where you are.

Any silicone sealant is aquarium safe as long as it doesn't contain anti-bacterial/anti-mould/anti-fungus additives. Check the labels but if in doubt don't use it, get one labelled aquarium safe.
