I was watching that US programme "Extreme Makeover Home Edition" on tv a few days ago as I think it is a brilliant programme and during this particular build they demolished a house, rebuilt a larger one in it's place all in the space of a week.

In this episode when the family went into the house that was built for them there was a beautiful tank in the living room and one of the children loved fish, so they put a Marine tank in his bedroom (built into the wall) and when he went into his en suite bathroom his sink was also a fish tank!!

How did they manage to establish these tanks in what must have only been a couple of days, especially the Marine tank.

i tihnk i saw that one john... erm its kinda crazy... maybe they uh i dunno.... are magicians :p jk well yea i just wish people would stop that kinda stufff :(

I indeed think the answer to that would be, they didn't. Don't forget that for the show it only has to look pretty for a day. Most of the times shows like this don't give about the quality of the fishies life at all. The tanks will more than likely not have cycled, and will simply have gotten fully stocked right away.

Ofcourse, it's also possible that they got filter material from a different tank and added that. The tank should be fully cycled (when done right) within a week when done like that.

Marine tanks are completely different. If I remember correctly, once you've added live sand and live rock, you can slowly stock right away. Actually, I believe that if you don't the live rock will die off ... pretty much an instant cycle. Mind you, this is what I've read and what I remember ... I don't know anything about saltwater tanks, so I might very well be wrong if I've read the wrong information :p

I had the same thoughts about the marine tanks and live rock/sand. I have also watched that program and said to myself "There is no way they are going to be able to properly maintain that tank!" (Knowing how many of us have started off our fish keeping, and the fact that some of these tanks would require large water changes)

I saw an episode of that where they had the bathroom sink counter a fish tank. It was weird, i dont know how it could be cleaned either.

I think it had mollies in it...

I was watching Cribs on MTV when Al Harris was on it, and he had the most beautiful looking salt water tank mounted in to the wall, then in his bedroom he had a circular tank hanging upside down from his ceiling. :/

also on mtv kribs, i think it was clinton portis or some football player who had a television molded into a fish tank so the fish tank was essentially the cabinet.

Actually you can instantly cycle both fresh and marine tanks.

Fully cured Live Rock makes a marine tank ready for stocking straight away as Erised mentioned.

In Fresh you just clone a tank (use old cycled filter media) like I have every time since I set up my first.

Wouldn't be that hard to rig up, certainly not with the resources they have.
