hi thanks for your help so far i think i will go for the lidded tank rather than open next qu. should i go for the tank with the built in trickle filter 3 or 4 types of media in back of lid type (it runs along the length of the tank) or go for the external filter . i already have a fluvel 302 big one which i can also run if necss. are trickle filters ok or should i go for the extern. ????

Trickle filters do work ok but I prefer to use external filters. Less space taken up in the tank, easier to maintaince (dont have to mess about in the tank to take it apart) and you have more choice as to what media you use (mainly just bio balls/bio rings and filter wall but its good to have options).

+1

Externals are better. :good:

I've been running AquaOne's with hooded trickle filters for years. They really keep the ammonia/nitrite at a steady zero. Media is a sinch to maintain although a bit of a chore to clean power head but as this only needs doing every few months or so, no problem :good:

i see that obviously peoples opinions differ a lot thanks for the input as it is i could be going for a *boalong* i think that the name 150 x 46.3 x 71 high with cabinet filter heater 549 delivered cant say fairer than that. it comes with a fluval 405 and a couple of heaters they work out 140 quid straight away so appears to be good bargin :good:

Hmm, what size is your tank? I have never delt with 'in tank' trickle filters, but if its a large tank, it might be worth you getting a regular trickle filter, I find these to be preferable over canisters personally.

EDIT: I would have to disagree with most people saying trickles are crap, the regular, under the cabinet trickles are in my opinion, the best filter around, huge media capasity, little maintinance, unlimited customability and the price, much much cheaper to build your own (which isnt hard at all).
