I was just tinkering with arranging plants and decor when Ian spots that the filter is leaking all over the floor. bugger. Took us forever to figure out why, must have got knocked somehow and the seal's buggered. So eventually we manage to get it set up, sat in a bucket which we're keping a v close eye on so it doesn't overflow. Then the bloody thing won't start again, and we bought it 2nd hand and don't have the primer for it so each time we try and start it we have to suck on the end and get a gob full of fishy water. mmmmm nice anyway we eventually got it working about 8.30 (we started all this about 4pm).

hi,
i have a juwel 180ltr, i want to get an external filter to run along side the standard juwel internal,
my choices are,
fluval 205 ,which is for tanks up to 200ltrs. £52.95.
eheim ecco 2232, which is for tanks up to 100ltrs, £52.95.
as well as extra bio load, what i also want is a pre filter so the water looks clear, from the pic ive seen of the eheim it has a poly pad, i cant tell if the fluval has a pre filter pad.
also do you get everything in the box ready to go? are they easy to maintain?
thanks for any info. donna![]()
I've never used an Ecco - but have been advised by enough people not to. And from enough reviews I've read think you'll be better off with a Classic Eheim 2213 to run in conjunction with your existing internal Juwel.I also have a Juwel 180 and was also thinking of having the Eheim Ecco 2234 running alomgside the built in filter.
The Eheim's are new to me however - I'll be grateful if someone can advise of the maintenance schedule for the external Ecco. I read on a couple of websites that once set up, there's no need to open it again for a 2-3 months, so I'll be very grateful if someone can confirm this is the case. I also have the Juwel structured background in place, so will this interfere with the internal pipework of the Ecco.
im running a eheim 2213 on my 37g tank and it does its job i would recomend it 101% waters always crystal clear
Further to this , i have a uwel rio 125 tank with the origional Filter + a fluval 2 internal filter .
I dont like the look of the fluval in the tank & want an external pump For aesthetic / better filtration . any suggestions ?

It depends on whether you plan on leaving the Juwel filter in and running the external as a suplement or you want to cut out the Juwel filter (the most popular choice) and havr the external as your sole filtration method.
If as a supplement then one of the smaller Eheim models such as the classic 2213 or ecco 2232 would do you fine but if you want the external as your sole filtration then a larger filter such as the classic 2215 or ecco 2234 would be needed
hi,
i dont think there is anything wrong with the juwel filters, infact i think there fine, im just toping mine up so i can clean them one at a time and have more bio room, yes juwel take up loads of room and i guess it would be good to have extra swimming room, im keeping mine in and running both, the eheim ive chosen is for up to 200ltrs so when i upgrade to the juwel 260 i will use this as an add on also.![]()

Personally i preffer the 2215 for its simple no nonsence design and practicality but some people preffer the self priming pump handle of the ecco range, its a matter of personal prefference at the end of the day.
Juwel filters are one of the worst designed filters on the market, the fixed casing is difficult to clean and allows large amounts of sludge and debris to build up inside which causes nitrates to sky rocket. They are probably fine for what they were originally designed for, that is very lightly stocked densely planted tanks which are favoured in continental Europe (often referred to as Dutch style aquariums). The UK/American style of the hobby is more based around the fish and we tend to have much higher stocking levels than our continental cousins, the Juwel filters are not designed to cope with the higher bio load of such tanks and problems invariably start to form within 6 to 12 months.
The majority of Juwel tank owners on this forum have removed the Juwel filter box completely and replaced it with a more suitable filter.
All your questions answered here!I'm Just thinking that i might as well get rid of the Juwel pump , i was going to leave the box in place , A to keep the heater in and B not sure how to remove the casing![]()

Are they easy to remove ? and what about the heater , should i get a better one ? or where do i put it once its out of the case ?

Am I glad I made that thread - the number of times people ask that exact question I've lost count of.
