I am currently installing a fish tank into a window space in an internal wall (16" thick victorian Railway Station wall) . All is going well, custom tank is ordered. Now to decide on what exteranl filter to buy.

The Fluval look good but reading the on-line manuals last night I note that they must be no more than 4'6" below the top of the tank. I would prefer to site the filter on the floor which is 6'6" from the tank top.

The tank is 30" high and approx 300L

Is there an external filter that will pump this hight of water (6'6") ?

hi,
why must you have the filter no more than this hight, is it because it wont work. could you build a shelf and at one end of the shelf put a door so as to hide the filter

fluval's aren't brilliant filters anyway so don't worry that you can't get one of those.

I'd look into Eheim's...... it's really the specifications of the return pump that you need to look into to see how high it can pump the water.

Not sure on the answer to this one (I'm a noob!) but is putting the tank in a window a good idea? I thought it brought problems of fluctuating temps, algae and even overheating in the Summer....

The height limit will be down to the head of water created by the water in the pipe which the impellor has to overcome.Even if an external could work at that height, I'd think it would shorten the life of the pump (again experts may disagree  )

It's an internal window so the issues with light should not be a problem, no worse than any other 'normal position', I hope ;)

I could, it's more reasons of asthetics (sp?)

Thanks for the warning, I see form some of the other posts that Fluval's are warned against

:) Ahhhhh ok I'd made the assumption it was a standard one, with an inside side and an outside side :D

Do post pictures when it's all set up, sounds like a great place for a tank.

I will post some pics, but it will be a few weeks yet :)

I have been looking at the Eheim filters and they look good. I like the idea of one with a heater in it as the tank is viewable from both sides and it will mean less equipement in the tank. Does anyone have string views on not using one of these?

Are there good reason for buying a wet and dry filter? Eheim do one.

The tetratec EX1200 is specced at 1.8m (6ft)....
If you could lift it up a bit (6") it would be within specs so will not void the 3 year guarentee :)

I'm very impressed with mine (way better that the fluvals we ahve and the rena XP3

Cool I'll take a look at that, thanks
