Well I've just got my first external filter, the APS ef200. I've primed it, no air bubbles or anything in the pipes but it literally sounds like a running tap gargling away. I know this can't be right and I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

There like a little plastic piece on the inflow but I don't know if this is a valve of some sort or whether it shouldn't be there?

Please could someone help as this is less than ideal as it's in my bedroom :(

It does sound like it's still got air trapped in it somewhere.

Try tipping (gently!) the filter and see if that dislodges it.

This may sound silly but should I switch it off first? Thanks

Best not to; the air will loosen better if the filter is running (which is why I said to tilt it only gently!).

Thanks.. I've tried and I could see/hear air coming out. Only thing is.. it started leaking water as I did it! :(

These dont normally leak when you tip them. Is there a gap around the head to the canister? there shouldnt be, two causes, the baskets are not in straight or you have over filled them not allowing the head to sit right and allowing air in.

Also with these the intake pipe where the first straight pipe fits to the bent pipe, is that under the water level? sometimes air can get sucked in there.

Is the seal damaged. If not try some silicon grease on the seal . What make and model is the filter?
Sorry just noticed you said model.
There should be a tap on both inlet and outlet.

Right I've opened everything up.. all the baskets have clicked into place and look straight but there is still a slight gap on one side. The intake pipe is below water level so air isn't getting in through there.

Urgh wish I hadn't bothered with this external just been a pain in the a***!

In fact I'm just gonna try it without anything in it and see if it's still gargling

Thanks for the responses though

Are you using the skimmer? sometimes if they are not set right they suck air in also. I never bother tipping mine, they usually clear themselves after a while.

I've tried it without anything in, still the same little gap and it sounds just as bad.. I dunno should I not hear any 'running water' or am I just expecting too much?

EDIT: It's decided to get a lot quieter. Thats a lot for all the suggestions..

This forum is great!! (when the people on it are ;))
