Just found an 8 month old ex1200 about 30 miles from me, selling for £35.

I could wait (as I shouldn't really spend any more money), but do you reckon I'll come across another like it? (If I will then I'll wait as petrol money will be at least £5).

What should I be looking for when buying second hand?

If it comes with all pipes and all media its a good buy, be carefull some people try rip you off saying you need to add sponges and there cheap when there are like £15 for tetratec 1200's. you can buy a brand new with warrenty for £85 so £35 with media is good :good:

As long as the seller can prove the filter is only 8 months old, and in good working order you are on to a winner :good:

As allready said tho if in doubt fork the extra ££ out for a new filter with 3 year warrenty.

£35 good price rrp £100

when u collect, test the motor head -feel the motor churning smoothly - its the most important part of the cannister.

That and the fact that its water tight. You may need ring seals / vasaline.

personally i wud bin the media & buy replacement - not worth the risk.

Or if u want to risk it, bleach or potassium permaganate it, and really rinse it out.

It it was me I would just save and buy a brand new one JBL's range are good many of my friends have them and have had no problems and there reall good value for money mine was £94 up to 300litre tank but you can get them much cheaper on zooplus.co.uk have a look

Thanks, I think the petrol will take it up to too much... maybe costing £45 total and I've seen brand new ones for £90 online.

I don't need it just yet, I already have an ex1200 so ideally would like the same to help with media buying etc, I'm going to be stocking cichlids, and am only 50% stocking until I can buy the new filter. Will keep an eye out for anything more local.

If anyone else is interested PM me and I'll send you his details, he's in Southampton.

It seems like a reasonable buy but be careful not to get ripped off like i did. I saw a eheim 2213 online for £25 which i thought was a bargan so i bought it.. when i got home it was missing all the pipes, spraybar etc. i have since spent a further £36 on bits and the filter media.. then today i found a brand new on on an online shop for £44 complete with media...lets just say lesson learned!!
