How often should you try to clean the insides of the pipe/tubes of external filters as mine are approx 2 mts each in length and awkard to get to,also do you get much bacteria stored in the pipework as i`m a bit worried about how long i`ve got to do the job before i start to lose bacteria in my filter.
Any advice appreciated

there does not seem to be a rule. but if you notice the flow dropping, or if you can see the pipe is getting clogged up.
at 2mtr in length you will not find a brush to do the job, though attaching a wire to the end and threading it through first, may do the job. if you have access to a pressure washer, they seem to do the job well.
as for time, you are looking at a few hours before the filter will start dying.
I would guess there are bacteria in the tubes, but the amount in comparison to your filter will be quite small. but to be on the safe side, do the pipes only and do not combine the job with any other tank maintenances.
