External filter cleaning.

Quick one today! Question about cleaning externall filter how do you all do it keeping al
The good bacteria in there do you empty all the water out of the filter and clean the sides? New to the external filter stuff.

Which filter do you have? Sometimes a bit different but usually I would fill a bucket with tank water, unhook the filter how ever it needs doing then dunk the sponges and media in the baskets in the bucket. You can then clean out the canister bucket and pipes etc. To clean the media and sponges just give the baskets a shake to loosen anything in there and squeeze the sponges into tank water.

Just really important to use tank water to clean them in rater than tap water. Also dont be surprised if you get a bit of a brown cloud after you reconnect the filter its normal and will clear in an hour or two.

No probs just remember not to be too thorough its better to be consistent over time rather than risk over-cleaning
