Hi

I have a survivor fish which has extended faeces!

I've recently started keeping tropical fish with initial but short term success.

I had a small packaged 30L tank, for around 2 months things were ok I had a small number of fish and a real plant which turned out to have snails on it. Initially I thought this would be good but then the snail population exploded resulting in rapid deterioration of the fish. Overnight the water went cloudy, I intended to clean the tank when I returned from work but it was too late, the water was very dark.

I managed to save 1 of the fish, this I have kept in a large bowl while I prepare a new larger tank (from a different shop this time with better advice) to re-house the survivor, now named Rasputin, and get some more fish.

The new tank has been maturing for 2 weeks and is ready to accept fish but I have noticed that Rasputin produces long strands of faeces around 2"+ from a fish 1" long? He seems fine, is eating ok and swimming well, initially he was a little sluggish and couldn't swim well.

We want to keep Rasputin but are concerned he is ill and don't want to infect the new tank.

Can anyone offer any advice on what he may have and if introducing him to a new tank and new fish cause future problems?

Many thanks,

Tony.

Well im a newbie myself but i know it takes well over 2 weeks to cycle a tank

Read the topic at the top of this page regarding cycling
As for the poop... well mine mostly dont poo like that but now and again i do see one with like this but they have shown no signs of illness

Actually you will find the thread about cycling at the top of the new to the hobby bit

Thanks

The tank has been maturing for over 3 (I hit the wrong key!) weeks now as detailed in the set up guide with the tank.

As you have fish that occasionally produce similar waste this gives me hope so if there are any other similar experiences of this or any of my original queries I'd appreciate it.
