I have developed an excel file that I'd like to share with the forum.

It's a compatibility/stocking aid

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to upload an excel file to the boards....

Can a moderator or someone help?

Upload it to a file sharing website, like Zippyshare and post the link on the forum :)

We have had some mixed results of using external compatibility and stocking level data here on TFF. As Rogue suggested, you could store the file on line and provide a link, but I would be more concerned about content. What is your source of information about compatibility and what are you doing to present your results?
The thing we get into is the diverse experiences of fish keepers. I may find that a Betta splendens gets on just fine in my guppy tank, actually it is true, but many people on the various on-line sites, including here on TFF, are convinced that a Betta splendens cannot be housed with guppies. Does your file have any way of resolving conflicting opinions? Do you default, for reasons of fish safety, to saying that specific combinations simply will not work? Do you give up on such combinations and simply leave them out of the final product? Do you have a way of providing conflicting opinions about particular combinations?
In the past we have had other people here who provided their own databases for fish compatibility and stocking levels who made valiant efforts to do the best they could but, as with all such things, they failed from a lack of the personal touch. Although they presented our membership with "accepted" typical advice, they failed to consider the real variables involved in stocking a tank. A real world "expert system" for tank stocking would indeed impress me but I have seen far too many that leave out this or that factor when presenting their results and the final product can easily be picked apart by a truly knowledgeable individual. As I have already said, a true expert system would be very welcome but the other kind has been tried before and we ended up banning direct links to it.

I've used several sources for information.

The program its self actually requires a lot of the information to be input by hand. I will show some screen shots to gauge interest and then go if there are favorable reviews I will upload it to a file share site.

More or less the program (more of a chart and graph) has 42 spots for you to input the fish that you like. you input the name, family, both high and low temp ranges for the fish, also the high and low ph and dh, adult size, and breeding ease via 1, 2, or 3. The program takes the data you input and graphs it on two charts that allow you to view the data to see if the requirements of the fish would allow them to be kept in the same tank. The other chart is filled in based upon the users opinion from reading and information they may find on other sites.

Perhaps I've misrepresented what I've created.... It is really nothing special. The main benefit of it is to cross-reference the stats of the fish to see if they can share a tank. The compatibility portion as I've stated above is left up to the individual for the very reason that you stated.... there is no replacement for real life experience. The other part of the program simply follows the inch of fish/gal of water rule so that a person can see how many fish they can stock.

I'll go in the house and get some screen shots of what I've done and members can chime in on if they'd like me to host and link to it or not.

here are the screen shots.

I'm also toying with the idea of making one using macros to track tank parameters via control chart to let people know if their tank is acting up before it gets out of control. I'm just starting it for mine.

I work with stats all day long and I see that fish keeping can be aided with that type of charting also.

anyway here are the screens of what I threw together.

This is filled out by the tank owner based upon what they have learned/read

Rogue4Fish;

I have no idea what it is like.

Over the last little while, I have been learning more about keeping fish.

When looking into fish that I like, I decided to make this simple little excel spreadsheet and graph because I got confused and tired of comparing numerical stats.

Once the data is input in the chart the bars appear on the graph. I can then visually make a comparison if the red bars line up together and yellow bars do the same, then the fish can survive in the same tank. The other chart is then filled out with the fish that you'd like to keep, you populate it with a y(es) or n(o) based upon research you have done.

It is nothing special, simply a way to compare stats and if fish can be tank mates.

I found while I was researching info that I'd find two fish that get along together, but only one would get along with a third. This just simply makes it quicker to compare.

So it's really just formatting software and not software that has pre-loaded fish compatibility info, correct?

(AKA it's not like Aqua Advisor at all - which would say "NOT Recommended to Keep Betta Splendens with such-and-such"

That is correct doc7.

It's just an aid.

Like it was stated earlier, nothing replaces experience when it comes to compatibility of fish due to mouth size, aggression, etc.
This is just a visual way to look at water stat compatibility.
