At times when everything starts to go wrong do you ever feel like packing in fish keepiing, and getting a less espensive hobby. as at times i've really thought about it, as when i start to lose fish i think is it worth it.

Yep!

The Pond is being filled in. It's so old it needs to be re-built, and can't see that happening anytime soon. So unless I win the Lottery and can spend loads of time and money on a new one, it's not gonna happen.

Yup. Recently felt like that too. That was when I had EIGHT tanks. The hobby became a job, and I found Sundays becoming just 'another work-day'. Instead of rest.

Too beat this, I have down-sized and are now the owner of FIVE tanks. Sundays are a little freer, but not by much. That 'feeling' hasn't gone away.

If you're feeling disillusioned, perhaps down-sizing might be good for you too? Its a good time too. Have you seen the number of customers in your LFS recently? If its like mine, busy, now is a good time to start selling-up some.

Best of luck.

(PS My condolences if you've lossed any fishes.)

Same here, When i had 9 tanks running i was getting depressed by them. Now i am cutting down and am much happier with the tanks I have.

I was wondering whether working at a fish shop would make me less enthusiastic about my fish but it has done completly the opposite, I am on a drive for knowledge, my thirst for seeing new fish and reading more information and talking to more people just keeps on growing!

exactly the same for me.

i recently downsized a bit too.

my final plan is to have 4 larger tanks.

my 210g with all the big oddballs in.
my 125g fahaka puffer tank (in ordering stages)
my 100g SA cichlid community with odles of plecs
and a 90g marine reef set up (still in research stages)

my current problem is having to water change tanks upstaird which is really annoying, but the spare room has been donated to me fish so once a few tank are shut down and things are tidier in there water changes will take alot less time.

also with me finishing college this summer (wooohoooo no more education) i'll have more time to do the water changes :)

Yes, especially when it gets nice out, as it has been since the weekend here. Really don't feel like spending a few hours in the basement on tank maintainance. My pairs have been on a non-spawning strike, or spawn & immediately eat them for the last 3 months. Hopefully some weather changes will change that. No excitment without a new spawn growing out.

never thought of packing fish keeping in. I have though of packing cory keeping in though. I've had like 7 die

I know the feeling. Between working full time, being a part time student again, volunteering, and planning a wedding, I have very little extra time to do anything hobby related, even beyond my fish. I've even lost a few fish due to my not being able to keep up on water changes like I should. :( I've solved part of this by loaning out some of my breedable bettas to members of my local betta club. As for the other fish, I'm down to only 2 tanks, and if any fish die, I'm not replacing them until life calms down. I have dreams of more tanks, but have learned my carrying capacity for right now. But it has also helped me to narrow my focus of what I'd like to keep in the future, beyond a regular community tank, I've found a few species I really want to focus on when I have the time once again.

i almost did pack, i was trying to sell my fishtanks and all my equipment. lots of people on this forum wanted it, but others told me to keep it for later. well, i came back like a month later after rc boats got kinda boring

well i'm still new i suppose but i get a drive for something and slowly but surly iron out all of the imperfections! i'm planning my discus tank soon but am actually temped to take a course in some sort of fish studies.

I have been keeping fish for about 7 years and have about 10 tanks that I am currently looking after and have never once thought about down-sizing; it always about getting more and more...
I blame that mostly on the fact that I do not have a life and have not had any major losses of fish (I live in the middle of no-where where entertainment is nill)

I hope you stay in the fish hobby even if that means looking after less tanks or hardier fish because they are always fun to look at and I think you would miss them if you completely packed it in.

Wilder, you better not be packing in fishkeeping!
You are our walking medical encyclopedia. We need you here!

But I did think about packing it all in the day Amos died (my first betta).
That was a rough day.
But now I want more more more.
I have stopped at 12 fish.

for now. :D

The thought has never crossed my mind... I just love fishkeeping way too much!
The closest I've ever come to "packing it in" is promising myself I won't get more than 15 bettas at a time... since wuv is sending me some, though, I think I just broke my promise!
I have no self control. ^_^

You must make sure you get them in sets of 4 now, you know.
You can't have unequal lines of pictures in your signature.
;)
