Poking around in this one website that lets you put together a tank with a list of fish based on how big your tank is and stuff, I started playing around and it says that rummy nose and black neons will go together with a firemouth just fine, but then it says penguin tetras wouldn't do good, yet the penguins are bigger than the friggin black neons full grown! Plus, I don't understand this whole firemouth's are community/no their not thing from a bunch of other websites. I know cichlids aren't exactly the most friendly of fish sometimes, but so many conflicting reports!! Wtf? I mean, is it just that most people don't keep them with anything other than plecs and other cichlids, or are these people nuts? I figure fires would eat anything that can fit in their mouths, but then something like this comes up and then it's like, What?

well if you have a pair of firemouths,i dont recomend them for a community.but if you have one firemouth it wll do fine with large tetreas(neons harliquens and glo lights shouldnt be kept with them)

i think The-Wolf kept a firemouth with danios and various tetras for some time. and i think penguin tetras are slower then black neons so thats why they shouldnt go -_- not to sure on that though

DD

When I was little I used to get feeder guppies to feed to my 3" firemouths...Imagine what a full grown FM could do to tetras! :p

I forget where I ead it at, but this one site said that if you let the fire grow up around the other fish then it usually leaves them alone. But then I wondered, well, you can try the same thing with angels in neons, but how often does that work? And then I wondered whether I should make a grilled cheese sandwich or not, decided yes, and got off the computer :p

i dont think firemouths are any less aggresive than any other cichlids, they are mean and territorial and predatoy (in other words they WILL eat/torture your tetras or guppies or wut ever) do not under estimate the power of this fish lol

what is the site? id like to check it out

website on crack....

I found it listed in a post a while back, and for my thirty gallon (according to it's community builder) I could fit:

1 firemouth
6 rummynose
6 black neons
2 bristlenose
6 tiger barbs
1 rainbow cichlid

and still have room left over. Which made me think I should ask you whether this was a load of crap, cause I can't even imagine this many fish all in my tank, especially when it didn't stated any incompatability issues between any of these fish. I did say guppies were a no no, but then the black neons were yes? I felt my brain explode...

firemouths, like all cichlids, vary in temperament. some can be kept with community type fish and others will get too aggressive. I've kept many thorichthys species with platys with no problems. getting the firemouths as young as possible and growing them up with non-cichlid fish will help but some will just be too aggressive. it all depends on what non-cichlid fish you want, tank size and if there are other cichlids in the tank. IME, if 2 or more cichlids are kept with non-cichlid fish, they'll be more concerned with guarding their territory from the other cichlid and pay no mind to the non-cichlid fish. :)

my 125 gallon used to have an 8" midas, 6" jack dempsey and 5" green terror along with 2 bala sharks and a plec or 2. the midas would defend it's territory against the JD or GT and chase them all around the tank but never once bothered either bala shark and the balas would swim right upto and around the midas no problem. :)

whoa, that site IS on crack, lol i laughed when u said that hahaha, bud sadly its too true

I know! I started reading into it further and it suggested that male bettas can be kept by themselves or with a bunch of females, and if you ask the people in the betta forum they all say this sort of thing is a very bad idea!

One extra question though, are they on crack about the barbs? They seem like the sort of fish that could handle a firemouth, but I never kept them, so I have no clue.... I just hate the look of most tetras, big or small I'm sorry, but they look evil!!!
