Hello all,

I know there are a couple of members that are Endler/Livebearer specialists...so a question to you, and anyone else with thoughts...

Iā€™ve decided to have Endlers in my new tank when itā€™s ready for fish (3-4 weeks away yet) but which ones..?

Lots are advertised as Endler Guppies and few that Iā€™ve seen seem to be ā€œpurebredā€... There are a couple that I particularly like the look of (names have escaped me at the moment but one is blue)...Iā€™ll look them up and come back with details...

Iā€™m planning on a male only group at the moment because of practicalities of babies/tanks/space and experience, but thought later down the line I could perhaps get some females is a separate tank to try and keep a little control over numbers.

So my questions are, do I go ā€œgenericā€? Or more ā€œspecialisedā€œ? And, if they started breeding how do you move on excess fishes..?

thanks in advance ?

The vast majority on endlers in shops are hybrids with guppies.
Back a decade or so ago, there was a website for endlers, with a list of members who bred class N endlers. But this website has long gone I'm afraid. However, google tells me there is a Facebook group for endlers in the EU which would be worth investigating.

Since those are in a shop, they'll be hybrids. Most fish shops in the UK stock endlers, but they don't tell you they are hybrids.

The only way to get 100% pure endlers is from a breeder. The tricky bit is locating a breeder of class N endlers. 15 or so years ago (before I realised my soft water isn't ideal) I bought class N endlers from a breeder who I contacted from the now disappeared UK version of the endlersrus website.

Do you go generic or specialized? That's something only you can decide...
Purebred ones can be a specific strain or a hyrbid strain. As long as they breed phenotypically true, they're purebreds. But if you mean a wild strain, depending on your location, it might be harder to get. But of course, there are a serious number of wild endler strains available. But not always through retail. There are online sales that offer wild and hybrid strains. Me personally would advise to see a private breeder who keeps the desired strains you're looking for. I don't know where you're located. Maybe there's a private endler breeder in your area.
You've mentioned something about 'blue" ones. Which kind? If you mean a japanese blue, it's a hybrid or a guppy but no pure endler. There are some pure endlers that do have some blue. But exactly how I'm saying it, just partial blue.

How to get rid of excessive fish? Selling or donating...

A male only tank can be done pretty well. There might be some chasing in the beginning (but doesn't have to) but that will pass. For if that happens, it's just developing a pecking order (hierarchy). Once every male knows his place, the chasing will stop.

The website Essjay is referring to, I assume that could be the one of Adran Hernandez. He's more active on Fb with his endlers than elsewhere. He hasn't updated his old website on the net.

Here's a link to a page of my own website about endlers (not commercial) to give you an impression about the diversity of endlers:

Adrian Hernandez ran the American endlersrus website; there was a British sister site that ran for a few years, though I can't remember the exact url now, and that's the one I used. It was a long time ago!

Have you already tried the BLA (British Livebearer Association)? They might have more info.

Hello :)
Probably 4 weeks.

Yes easily. And no need to move on excess fishes ;)

Your tank measurements ?
Water parameters ?
The tank is 60 x 30 x 30 cms (54ltrs).
My water is hard, but I canā€™t remember the numbers off of the top of my head!
0.25 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites and 5ppm Nitrates on day 5 of a planted tank...

@Avel1896 - I know I just wanted to add some form of time frame to show Iā€™m still in thinking phase!
LOL
It doen't prevent from being foresighted on some parameters ;)
54 liters is the minimum consideretd for Poecilia "guppy" reticulata, but nice for Poecilia "endler" wingei.

Their water parameters are more or less the same :
Temp. : 18ā†’28Ā°C (65ā†’82Ā°F)
pH : 7ā†’8.5
Hardness : 8ā†’30 dGH (143ā†’536 ppm)
