Hi all,

My largest Emperor Tetra (female) has swollen and slightly red gills. It looks like shes puffing them out. She seems fine but is being rather territorial (unlike her), with the other 5 female ETs in the tank.

Is she just displaying her gills to look bigger or does she have an infection of some sort?

Water stats are fine:

pH 7.6
NH3 0
NO2 0
NO3 10

Thanks all,

Ryan

110L, around 25 degrees...

No pic, off into work now!

Will get one up later.....

Ryan :)

How many fish and which type.
What test kit are you using.

Red inflamed gills can be bad water quality, gill flukes, bacterial gill rot.

Is the fish also showing any of these signs.

Flicking and rubbing. Rubbing the gills on plants or ornaments in the tank.
Erratic swimming, or darting.
Laboured breathing, or gasping at surface of tank.
Any excess slime, or excess mucas on the gills.
Do the gills look like there bleeding.
Does the fish swim in a jerky movement.
Does the fish spit it's food out and not eating.
Any whiteness to the gills.
Any frayed edges to the gills.
To the gills stick out.
Are both gills red and inflamed.
Do the gills look really sore behind the gill plate.

Just back from work...

There is some sort of fluff/mucus trailing from one of its gills...

What's up with it and how do I treat it?!

Cheers,

Is Interpet's Anti Internal Bacteria No.9 any good? I can get some tomorrow if it's going to save my fish?.....

Where the pic lol.

Fish with flukes will flick and rub and also swim in a jerky movement.

If the bacteria med dosn't help get back to the board. As you could be dealing with a parasite like flukes.

I think Interpret have another med especially for parasites. Try that!

The symtoms are pointing towards bacterial, gill flukes.
Gill fluke also cause bacterial infections.

Poor thing the gills do look really red and sore.
How are the fish now?
