Is there anyone in Northamptonshire with a spare heater. Mine just went bang and nowhere is open until the.morning. I need a lend or tips on how to keep.the heat up until tomorrow morning. HELP

Been trying to get hold of my mother or sister as they both have tank and live there but I can't get them at the minute but I know they both have spare heaters for the reason your talking about.

Cover the tank with a blanket, heavy as possible, keep your lights off and don't feed them I was told when they were working on the electricity lines and all electric was off.

I've also heard of putting a hot water bottle in the tank too, obviously with hot water in although I don't know if that would be ok or not.

You could also raise your room temp and that should assist too.

Wrap a duvet round the tank and keep topping up with conditioned warmish water from the tap.

I have everything crossed.... tank is wrapped in blankets and a quilt, 5 hours after the 'event' the temperature hasn't even shifted by half a degree. I will be at the doors of my LFS the moment it opens in the morning to get a heater back into the water asap, this time I will be buying two, as I am not about to risk putting myself through this worry again.

5 hours gone, doors of the shop open in another 11 hours. please please don't let my fishy friends snuff it overnight.

Still no change in temperature thankfully. I don't want to go to bed, I find myself checking the temp every half an hour to be sure. Why oh why can't their be a fish version of A&E, so we can rush in 24/7 to get any urgent equipment!. I guess I should be thankful that the fish didn't get fried when it went off!.

Hopefully you didn't lose anything, my mate wasn't so lucky when his heater broke as it went while he was sleeping and because the thermostat was the bit that broke he woke to find that the heater had cooked all his fish

Yay.... I am a happy fish keeper. Woke up this morning and ALL my fish are still with me and looking none the worse for wear. From 5pm yesterday to 8am today the tank had only gone down by 1 degree, so the whole blanket around the tank does work. New heater in place and running and as a sorry for being kept in the dark for so long my fish are munching away on some bloodworms.

Yes I did. I have decided to keep a bit of a stock of the major essentials, have some spare bulbs and just ordered a load of spare parts for my filter, just in case. The fish haven't seemed to be stressed over what happened, but I was, so I am going into boy scout mode and decided to 'be prepared'

I think the blanket thing should be in everyones knowledge bank, as my situation was a heater going bang, but it only takes an extended power cut to shut your tank down and in that situation it doesn't matter how many spares you have.
