Emergency Amonia 0.25 Nitrite 1.0Ppm!

Filter went yesteray and was off for hours, new one in transferred old media. Fish looking pale and letahrgic. Checked and amonia is 0.25ppm and Nitrite 1.0ppm dark purple.

I'm water changing 75% now what else should I do when shall I test again

test about 4 hours afterwards, it should go down as the media regains its tiny loss of bacteria

You can test again as soon as you've finished.

Not much else you can do, apart from be prepared to do another water change if they're not low enough!

+1 on that...

If after 2 w/cs it isnt down to 0 then you have hit rock bottom as your tapwater will have some in it as well.

why has this happened I transferred the media

It's hard to say; it's probably just the bacteria getting 'used' to being in the new enviroment. It's a classic 'mini-cycle' and should only last a few days.

i agree with flutter,probably a mini cycle,You may have had some bacteria die off,keep testing & doing w/c's,you need to get down to zero to keep it in check,

Right done a 75% water change. When I came downstairs the nitrite was even darker purple more like 5ppm!!!!!!

I just tested again and amonia is 0 and nitrite is now 0.

When should I test again guys?

My Betta is looking very pale on his face.

Test again later this evening; sometime when you have enough time for a water change, if you need to do one, before you go to bed

Ok I'll test again later. God this is all such a nightmare. Also since yesterday they've been nipping and one Tetra is missing a load of scales. Do you think this was due to the levels?

Yeah tell me about it, it's the same with my dogs. Tillie recently had problems and was rushed to the vet and it would happend on bank holiday weekend when they're shut too. I get myself panicked though. I really get myself in a state worrying.

another question if I have to water change again shall I siphon or can I just cup it out which is quicker?

Yeah Tillie took a nail right off a few months back. Blood everywhere and she decided to jump up on my bed with it. But they're worth the trouble, I wouldn't be without my dogs. Thanks for the advice I feel calmer now the levels are back down. I'll do my check later and post back here.
