Emerald Cory’s at 84F

Hello! I’ve just recently gotten into the hobby, I’ve kept close track of the fish I’ve gotten for my 30Gallon. I picked up four emerald Cory catfish last week and really loving them, I did the research and it said I needed to keep the tank at 78f maximum.

I thought I could do this but I swear, my 10Gallon with a heater sits at 80f and my 30 with 2 temperature things is always sitting at 84F, no heater, no lid and with a fan blowing at it.

The catfish seem fine, they’re always moving around, sometimes they’ll sit and hide and do their thing but I’d say they’re pretty active fish.

Should I take them back to the store? I’ve read that it’s “fine” and other people say it’s “fine” but they’ll be dead in a week.. love them dearly but I’m very proud of the fact that nothing in my tank has died yet.. I don’t want them to be the first, had them about a week

Is it only going to be temporarily at that heat? Are you currently enduring a heat wave or something or is just always hot in your home? If the latter, then yes it might be worth taking them back. If its temporary then hold on to them.

I live in a cool temperate place it’s just the last of this summer heat. It shouldn’t be a problem a month from now.. I’m thinking I’ll spend a couple hundred and pick up an AC anyways it might help

ive been dealing with heat waves all summer. I've got fish that need to be kept 75F and lower, but my temps have been hot like yours without heaters. One of my betta tanks recorded 93-94F range before I unplugged the heater on it!

If your home isn't that warm all the time, you will be just fine to enjoy your new catfish but emerald brochis get big, so you may wanna upgrade to a 20 gallon once they get a bit bigger

Should clarify, I only have 1 Beta in the 10 Gallon by himself. He's totally fine and happy it's just my 30Gallon community tank that seems to have issues, I've started putting ice in ziploc baggies and letting them sit on top for a bit. It tends to help a little

My thermometers are the cheap kind I believe. I have one located at the top left of one side that hangs off the rim of the tank down about 3 inches and another of the 2-3 dollar kind that sits at the bottom of the tank on the opposite side

Totally plan on upgrading to a 50-60 Gallon in a couple years, I've got some time until all my catfish grow to fullsize.. Today or this morning rather has been a lot better it's only at 80F I think it's just the next 2 weeks really and it's only 3-4 days here and there

I live in Texas and we are getting a crazy heatwave called summer. Anyways its like 110 degrees down here sometimes and the only way to keep the tank cool is to blast the AC at like 72 and have a bunch of fans in my room. Even then the tank stays just under 80! Crazy stuff.

I live in Texas too but have central air and my tanks are just where I want them. My cories are at 76F.

As has been mentioned, there is a difference between permanent and temporary when it comes to water that is too warm for a species. A tank kept at 84F 24/7 is way too warm for any species of Corydoradinae. But daytime temperatures around 84F during summer is manageable. Ensure there is good (maybe additional, depending) surface disturbance to keep a good influx of oxygen. Feed less; digesting food takes energy, a lot for fish, and this stresses their metabolism when other aspects are also affecting them.

There is no benefit in floating ice packs (or similar), this is only going to cause some fluctuation which if too rapid will be more detriment than benefit. Cooling naturally during the night is a different thing and not a problem.

Good to know I can keep them and they'll be okay, I'll limit my feeding a bit though I tend to over do it just a little bit because I've got very small short skirt tetras and want to make sure they get enough to grow

I run a bubble wall though and am looking to add another airstone or section of bubble wall just to help out, nothing wrong with a little more air! going to hold off on the AC maybe, find something not 400$... Haha anyways, thanks again everyone!
