Last night I noticed one of my male Ellioti looking very tatty, dorsal fin all bloody and torn, today he is barely breathing or moving, just hanging out around the top of the filter. Obviously the flaring and in-fighting between the group has gotten worse as I cant believe anything else caused this, unless the Nicaraguan got in on the squabbles. Im loathed to euthanise, but if he doesnt pick up soon, I fear no other option.

Oh no :-( , have you got a hospital tank? I hope he/she pulls through.

Ive got a small 20L tank, but no filter for it. The wounds look superficial, but he's so lethargic.

Could just be shock, how tall is your tank I have a 14" juwel internal (got suckers on so it sticks to the tank) or an 11" juwel internal filter (neither in use at the mo), I could whip out a sponge from one of my other juwel filters and bring it over tomorrow if you want.

Will let you know how he goes, Ive got lots of mature sponge, so no worries there :good:

Ok no probs hun, just let me know if you need a filter I an sure I can find something lol, I have 2 internals running in each of the 180l tanks so if need be you could borrow one of those for a couple of weeks.

Fingers crossed he pulls through, my male convict did the same to the female, I found her on her side at the top of the tank gasping, took them both out from the fry, he is now in the 400l tank and she has recovered after 24 hours in the hospital tank and is now in the 180l

Sorry to hear that, hope they pull through. Will be keeping an even closer eye on mine. Mine are not flaring so much now. Let us know how you get on.

I did a 20% w/c to see if that would help heal him up, he seemed to perk up for a while, but Im afraid now he's not breathing, he started swimming upside down and rolling, I think his swimbladder must have been injured as well, plus the blood on the dorsal fin, looks like it started to go underneath the skin too.

:rip: Little Ellioti :byebye:

I am so so sorry hun. RIP Ellioti

Today Ive found another Ellioti, male (again) dead, all colour gone, nips to fins etc, this is the now the 2nd one in less than a week and I have a feeling its not the other Ellioti in the group causing the problem.

I think and I could be wrong, that its the female nicaraguan causing the problem, particularly as its two males that have now died, she is always harrasing the group (and the geophagus suri's) but I now believe she is trying to get them to breed with her and they arent having any of it, so she just keeps up the pressure until eventually they cant take anymore :(

I need to move her to the other tank, but Im afraid she will cause more problems in there with the vieja, who is looking paler by the day without eating, so until he/she picks up, I think she could kill that too.

I think they are pairing off, i think one male is eliminating the others.

I personally have given up mixing centrals with Souths, i lvoe Firemouths but they never work out for me ever, i have tried 10+ specimens over the last 15 years and always ends up aggressive etc.

I know the Nic is a Central and so is the Elioti's...but its stil lthe same problem.

Possible, but the only aggro is with the Nic, the males occassionally flair at each other but nothing serious, whereas she will go hell for leather at them.

My Nic would attack my Tapajos etc also, had to get rid of her in the end also.

I think you are right hun, must be the nic, she was fine in my tank with the female ellioti, but remember I lost my male?? had both nics then although smaller so I didnt think it was them. When she was in my tank she had the 4 male cons they kept her under control and she was very placid with those about. I dont think its the other ellioti, I have 15 in one tank and 30 left in the other and although a little smaller than yours I dont have any squabbles. Not sure what to suggest! apart from maybe re-homing her as she is going at the geo's too, or if you wanted to keep her in the 400 I could possibly "fish sit" the the veija picks up.
