Hi,

I just got a Elite 60 L tank and it comes with a stingray filter and i was thinking of replacing it as i've not read great reviews of the filter. Now i read that a Fluval 2+ is good but it looks rather big and I wasn't sure if it would fit in the tank and if it would be too strong. If anyone could suggest a good filter for a 60 L tank as its due to come 2moro and I would like to pick up a decent filter so I can start the whole cycle process going tomorrow night.

Below is the tank I bought.

Thanks in advance!

Alan

yes, you are correct the stingray is a filter dismissed by many, can i ask how much money are you prepared to spend on a filter?- i dont want to bamboozal you coz you are new(i am unaware how much experience you have had) but if it were me i would have either the fluval u2 internal or preferably an external canister type filter, like the fluval 105 or Tetratec EX 600, but obviously these cost quite a bit more- but on the plus side, its more space in the tank, better flow rates, able to keep more fish due to higher ammount of de-nitrifying bacteria in a bigger filter(external) and looks better not clutting up the tank, all what will be seen is an intake pipe and output pipe :)

the fluval + range, like you have mentioned has been improved to the fluval U range, all in all a better range with better controls, but you can get the +'s for cheaper now :)

its all up to budgets!?!

I had that exact tank and replaced the stingray with the fluval 2+ straight away. I found I needed it on it's lowest setting otherwise it created too much current. But I'm pretty sure you can buy a spray bar attachment for it (I didn't know that at the time), so buy it and a spray bar. Or even the 3+ and a spray bar wouldn't be too bad.

Although as AdAndrews correctly said, depending on your budget the U range looks good.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick replys

I'm looking to spend no more than say £20-£30 on one but obviously if I can get a good deal on a good filter i'll be happy! I am drawn to the Fluval range but I'll see what my local pets at home store has and if they are not that greatly priced i'll just get one online. I had thought of getting an external one but i'm pretty sure my little one would be tempted to touch!

Its good to know that they would fit cos the picture looked quite tall but as long as it fits and keeps the fish healthy then that's the important thing.

Thanks

Alan

i have just got a fluval 2+ and it is a great filter. it is well worth getting as it will clean you tank very well. it cost £14 aswell.

yea, if were talking that money it must be an internal then.... dont dismiss certain models for size, the bigger the space for media(sponges etc) the better, but obviously you dont want a huge box taking up half of the tank.... you are really looking at the fluval u2, the fluval 2 plus, the eheim 2210

if it were me, out of these i would pick the fluval U2 :)

Thanks for all your help and i'll try and see what Pets at Home have and hopefully They have one of them and I get a fishless cycle started 2moro!

Thanks again

Alan

i bought the exact same tank 8 months ago and the instructions for the filter in the kit was so misleading and caused me to loose fish.

so after realising this i replaced with a fluval 2+ and never looked back its a top filter!!!

here are some pics of my elite 60 tank...

this is how i started out with the stingray filter:

then changed the stingray for a fluval

then changed the gravel for sand:

as you can see ive got an algae problem at the minute tho

I have the same tank and was running with the Stingray filter for the first couple of months, but have now changed to a Fluval U3. The only difference between the U2 and the U3 is how tall they are, with the other dimensions being identical. I'm pleased I went with the U3 over the U2 because it's pretty much a perfect fit and I get the extra filtration capacity. With the nozzle a couple of centimetres below the surface and with about 2 inches of gravel on the bottom, there is approx 3 inches of space left under the filter. Yes, the overall size is greater than the Stingray, but I certainly wouldn't describe it as too big. The Fluval protrudes more into the tank and the U3 is taller, but the Stingray is wider.

Yes, it's very powerful on full power, but the flow can be adjusted to a very low rate indeed. I haven't turned mine down too much as I was looking to improve oxygenation and moving to the U3 did the trick nicely.

pleas erember you need amonia to fishless cycle and I would go with a fluval look on ebay for a cheap second hand Fluval 2+ great filters and must be verycheap now Under£10 second hand
