Elephant Fish

Hello

I was wondering if somebody could confirm for me that a single elephant fish would be ok to live in a planted and decorated tank with 2 severums. I have been doing some searching of information and found nothing against this but thought that I should check before making the final decision.

Basically...no.

Elephant fish are shoaling fish and are suitable only for a species tank in all honesty. They don't do well in a 'normal' tank. Sorry...

as long as the elephant nose can get enough food then it should be ok. they are slow eaters and severums are greedy eaters so this might cause issues and lead to starvation. also a larger e/n might do better so it doesnt get picked on. any electic type of fish like knife fish and e/n do better as a single specimin unless you have a huge tank and stock quite a few to spread the aggression out. maybe pm Neale monks on this to confirm as im sure he can help you more

Thankyou for your responses.

Fluttermouth - the majority of places I have found to state they they are more aggresive with each other as a species as opposed to other fish.

The reason I have asked is because my local fish stockist currently has one living with other mixed fish within the store quite happily. It is around 5 inches in legnth and seems to be living quite happily. I have been keeping my eye on it and its tankmates for the past few weeks almost as a test to see what occurs.

My main concern was as Mattlee has pointed out, the competition for food and problem of possible starvation. Although it is suggested to feed after lights out which would minimise this issue.

Vin swords - thankyou for your input. What types of fish did you attempt to keep you elephant noses with? What do you think was your downfall?

discus, angels, and syno cats..

they hide all the time and died few weeks later.. they like to be in good numbers.. atleast 8 up.. so they can have some guts to swim around and find food.
