Its called "Shimming" and they do this when they want to get another Cichlids attention of the opposite sex in order to spawn.

If you have more Cichlids in your tank, then you might see some fry soon! :hyper:

Your welcome!

How many other Cichlids do you have in your tank?

And do you have caves and what not, as they will use this if they do decide to spawn.

how will i know which fish's attention it wants? i already have two convicts mating this will be very interesting!

The Cichlid that is willing to spawn, which you already know they do what is called shimming, and this is what your yellow lab is doing. They will try to do it in front/in the sight of the Cichlid they want to spawn with.

If the fish that they are doing the dance for shows no interest, then she will move onto another fish until there is a willing male, or unless there is no one that is ready yet.

They will keep swimming in circles/in front of the fish they are doing the dance for.

I can tell she wants to mate with the powder blue. 2 convicts have mated, i took my angel out to quarantine, my pink convict is a female and the powder blue is the only logical fish to mate with her. (unless because i took my angel out after i saw her doing this dance, the angel was a male)

Could i have powder blue electric yellow cichlids? will i have some fish half yellow half blue, or some fish blue and some fish yellow?

what if they chase the fish sort of in a circle?

Yes, Cichlids will inter-breed.

It is not the best thing to do as it will mess up the gene pool, but that is your decision to mate them or not.

If it were me, I would go through with it, just because I think it is neat when they spawn.

I do not know what color the fry will be, but it will be exciting and interesting to find out! :hyper:

You are welcome!

And good luck with the spawning!

Make sure you post on here if anything happens!

One thing to keep in mind is:

If this is the first time that your Electric Yellow is going to spawn, do not be upset if the first batch of fry do not make it.

They need to learn how to care for the young.

Good luck!

i know it's a bit off topic but will the third convict guard the eggs that the mates of convicts leave?

okay. would they learn from other fish doing that? (the convicts have had eggs many many many times i was told at the store)

The father and mother Convicts that have spawned and successfully laid eggs, will guard the eggs.

Convicts are one of the best when guarding eggs/fry.

Both parents will chase other fish, including other Convicts, away from where the eggs/fry are.

Sometimes the parents will bury the fry to protect them from other fish, so do not be alarmed if the fry go missing for a day or so.
