I am looking for a gravel vac that is stronger and longer than the largest one I found at the LFS, Penplax super battery powered.http://store.worldpetstore.com/subavac.html
I have this one that I elongated with a tube to keep the top at the water level mark.

It is really a chore to use this in my 110 gallon. Since the tank is so deep the elongation reduced suction and it barely works.

Any suggestions on a stronger gravel vac? Right now I can only syphon vac the tank and would like to do touch ups between water changes.

I would use a power head if need be, I bet that would provide adequate suction.

I think your best option is making your own.

I reakon if you get some large bore pipe and then get some larg tube attached to it which then attaches to a power heads inlet then that should pump it round well. If you then stuff lots of poly wool up the pipe then that should catch all the crud.

Hi....would a Python do it? I.e...the negative vacuum from the sink? Could you fasten the siphon to a pipe or broom handle, secure the tubing to it and do it that way? I'm not sure if the negative vacuum is enough or if you have a faucet near your tank, but, it seems very strong in my 46 gallon (granted it is only about 22" deep). SH

I think I will play with the power head and some nylon bags and see what I come up with, I will bump this thread when I have photos of my gerry rigged vac.
