Hi all,
I apologize in advance for what's going to be a very long post!

I've spent the last two weeks reading all I can about planted tanks and the various approaches to maintaining them, and I've got a couple of questions. But first: here's what I've got --

tank: 10 gallon
Substrate: Seachem's Flourite (onyx)
Plants: 3 java ferns, something else that's lowlight that I can't remember the name of  and java moss.
Lighting: (this is kinda tricky) 17 Watt plant spectrum, BUT tank is also in a room that gets a ton of direct, late-afternoon sun.
Fish: none yet. This week I'll likely be introducing a beta and a shoal of neon tetras. (they're okay w/ betas, right?)

My LFS sold me the few plants I've got (I know, I need more), along with a Seachem planted-aquarium starter kit that contains Flourish, Flourish Excel, and Flourish Iron. But since then, I've done a lot of reading and learned a few things: Chemistry/Math makes my head spin. Chuck's calculator isn't much of an improvement.

Additionally, I travel, occassionally gone a few weeks at a time. I need a tank-maintance system that my husband can handle. (he's good with the big, non-planted tank: Feed fish. Change water on Saturdays. That's about as in-depth as he's gonna get!)

SOOOO this leads to me EI. But I've read that it doesn't make sense to do it on anything less than 20 gallons, that it's only for medium-high light systems, etc. etc. But George's pinned topic gives dosing instructions for 10-20 gallon tanks, so I'm encouraged in that regard. So if what I've told you so far doesn't lead you to tell me I'm nuts, here are the rest of my questions:

-Can I dose EI-style with the Seachem products I've already got?
-If not, what exactly do I order, and where do I order it from?
-Is there anything I've said above that makes you think, "oh, this would work so much better if you ____" (and money's sort of a concern -- not that I'm unwilling to spend, but I sort of set up this tank without discussing it with my husband. He'll learn to like it a lot quicker if tank supplies aren't showing up on the credit card bill on a regular basis! )

Thanks a bunch!

No You need Potassium Nitrate (KN03), Potassium Phosphate MKP (KH2PO4) and some people also need Potassium Sulphate (K2SO4) but if you have already got Seachem Potassium that will do.

These are all available on Greg Watson's website (American site)

Your tank being 10 gallon doesn't use the watt per gallon rule the same as a 20-40 would. In general the smaller the tank the more WPG you need, the larger the less you need.

i.e. where a 30G can be medium high light on 2.5-3WPG a 10G would need closer to 5 which means you need loads more lights. Take a look at the journals on here and find a 10G one and see how they have done it.

Then take a look at the pinned article in the planted section here on EI. It will tell you how to mix the ingredients and the volumes to put in.

I mix mine with DI water as per the pinned article. I have 3 small old kids yoghurt bottles (100ml) and have written Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday on them (The days I dose the macro nutrients) I measure with a syringe into each of these bottles the KN03, KH2PO4 and K2SO4. If ever I wasn't at home my wife can then grab which ever day's bottle and pour it into the tank.

The Seachem will do for trace (micro Nutrients) see pinned EI article for quantity.

That leaves you with CO2!!!! I personally would get a 2 litre coke bottle. put a hole in the lid wide enough to fit some 6mm CO2 or airline hose (CO2 hose is better as it will not lose as much CO2) put 15 dessertpoons sugar into the bottle. Then put 1 teaspoon yeast. Fill with warm water to just where the neck starts to bend. Screw the lid on and shake, then connect the other end of the hose to your diffusor!!! You will need to buy a diffusor. Many cheap ones on ebay especially for Nano tanks and I guess yould be able to use one of these.

Thanks a bunch!
Nice Pun. lol

Well, I can't comment on the plants stuff, but the betta with the neons, you might want to rethink.
From what I understand, tetras are known to be fin nippers and might see a bettas large flowy fins as a great target. And since bettas aren't very strong swimmers, he won't be able to avoid them very well.

Thanks for the tips. Andy, regarding my lights & possible CO2 - I was going for a low-tech tank. I know you guys have such awsome tanks with all the extra lights, ferts, CO2, etc etc, but I'm not sure with my work/travel schedule if I can maintain a tank that's going to have such incredible growth rates -- never mind the cost involved.

My tank currently has the "deluxe" flip-top hood that just allows for the one light that came w/ it. I switched the bulb to a spectrum that's more beneficial to plants, and priced some of the other light fixtures, new hoods etc. The cheapest alternative for adding more light - according to the guy at my LFS, who's certainly been wrong before -- was $73. And I'm pretty sure that was without the bulb. So I was hoping that with the one 17W bulb, plus the 3 hours of direct sunlight that my tank gets in the afternoon, I'd be okay with some nice low-light plants. And the guy at the LFS said I wouldn't need CO2 with that set-up as long as I was giving them the carbon in liquid form.

So... how much did the LFS guys lead me astray?

I'd suggest a 2 x 15w FL lights and maybe the Excel, it's easy to use.
That would do well.

Then take the EI routine, cut it by 1/2 or so for your sized tank.
If you use CO2 gas, use full EI.

You can mix a week's worth or two weeks worth of the KNO3/KHPO4/Gh booster together in say 500mls of DI water and then just divide that volume into 500mls/7 or 14 days etc about 35 mls for a two week's batch.

Add SeaChem flourish at 2.5 mls 2-3x a week.

That's it other than Excel or CO2.

Tom Barr

That sounds do-able! One question, though - the two 15W; is that in addition to my current 17W, or should I get rid of that fixture entirely?

In the UK a lot of us use these bulbs:

http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?...products_id=399

55W in on 22" bulb. They come in 24W, 36W and 55W and only take up the same space as your 17W (I am guessing you have 1 24" T8) The do need a seperate unit though. I got mine for £20 but they are normally£30 so unit and bulb would be approx $75-$80. This might be what the chap inthe shop was saying.

Maybe Greg Watson sells the US version or the Dr????something site?
