I just perchased a brand new ehiem classic 2215 model, for up to 350ltr. as most of yo would know they come with sponges pipes all the works. Was i stroked by the lfs £65.99. The media for it was £8.49 per box they told me I needed 2 box of the cylinders and 1 box of the other.

This is the first external i have bought and not really sure about them.

Well as its an eheim, you can be pretty confident about its reliability, The downside to the classics though is getting working initially and after every clean

I have not even looked at it yet. I am keeping it for the new tank when it comes in november though i will start using it in the tank i have running now to get it going.

How long do they go before it will need a clean, roughly. I am using whats in my tropical setup atm plus adding 4 keyholes and 4 dwarf cockatoo cichlids. I have heard some say they are hard to work ans some say not but its not bothering me as it was the quality i am after

my first external was the 2214 i think, one of the classics anyway, the problem i found with them was that you have to be careful not to lose the clips on them or the whole thing will leak

atm i only touch my external filter every 4 months and thats on a well stocked tank within the recommended size for the filter

I don't use that brand but I find that my externals only need cleaning after several months. The beauty of an external is how much filter media they can hold and therefore how much c**p it takes to begin to plug one up.

Well that sounds good to me. The less work the better is what i say lol. The clips do seem very flimsy on them tho i think if they break or get lost i dont think it would be too hard to make something to suit.

So all in all it seems that it was a good deal then. What about running the new filter alongside the existing one. how long would you recommend i do this for? And would it be ok to run such a filter in a 90ltr tank?

I would run the new with the old for at least 4 weeks unless there is a pressing reason to cut it short. If you must cut the time short, do your first cleaning on the new Eheim and shove some of the old filter's media into any available space in the Eheim. That way you don't lose the benefit of the bacteria you have built up on the old filter. Be careful not to move so much over that it blocks flow through the new filter.
