hi,

my 2 year old eheim professional II has just blown its motor - it's now laying outside steaming. Not amused as these things should run for years.

So, can I replace the head part, or should I jump ship to another brand and start over? Tank is 400l and still has a smaller, older(!) eheim running on it for just these sort of occasions.

any thoughts?

thanks
tony

When I was looking for replacements for my pro II (gasket went), I think I remember seeing the 'head' bit, but the price was something like £104, which was basically what I paid for the filter new (£106), so I'm not sure if it would be worth it, the bit I saw for £104 was the part with the motor in it, I could be wrong so worth checking out but I just thought I would tell you.

If I had to get a new filter, I would be tempted to go for a tetratec EX1200, these have been getting good reviews on this site and the price is good too.

Thanks, Shroob,

they look good - i've ordered one,

cheers

I'd be tempted to send a letter to Ehiem saying that you expected better and had specifically chosen them because of their reputation for build quality and longevity. I reckon you got a dud and they'd be happy to replace it for you. (Even if you don't want it you could have it as a spare or flog it so you're not so out of pocket)

Supprise supprise, a new Eheim giving issues.... Most think it's rare, though it's happened to me too......Twice......

I Run the Tetratec EX1200, and they are great little filters. I bought my two from 1st 4 aquatics and they are the cheapest I have found for the EX1200 online :good: They cost £69.99 all in including media, accessories, three year warrenty and delivery. You can't go wrong with that  Delivery is next day if you order before 12pm also :hyper:

I also use Rena, and though I prefur the Tetratecs, they are still excelent filters. They are easy to prime, low maintanance and are quite powerful. I bought mine second hand though, so can't realy recomend a source for these. !st 4 aquatics don't stock them  The Renas will need the Bio-chem Zorb pad replacing before use though, but that isn't an issue for you since you already have a failed unit to tank media from :good:

HTH
Rabbut

Edit to add: Great idea from Egmel above, a little cheaky, but it's still worth a try. Doubt they will help somehow though, as I had issues getting a replacement and later refund on my two Eheims even under warrenty

I paid £69.95 at charterhouse aquatics, with free postage. So not a bad deal i think. Should arrive Monday.

Not sure I can prove date of purchase, or that I have any warranty type documents still. I might write to Eheim though - I thought they were the Audi of filters, but seem more Datsun ;)

I would still say Eheim are the most highly regarded filters still, and if money wasn't an issue I would choose an ehiem over any other canister filter. I wish I had bought the EX1200 when it was £60 like a month ago, but ah well. I think the EX1200 also comes with everything like media and hoses, which is a real plus.

You should find that Eheim give good customer service as well.

Whereas other.....don't.

As for the Tetratec filters as someone else said on here once and I don't want to buy a filter that's made by a company specialising in fish food. As tetratecs haven't been around for long I would wait a while and see how they turn out.

What illogical reasoning in this day and age when most sensible companies have diversified. Its like saying I wouldn't buy a car from a shipbuilding company - tell that to Mitsubishi.

I can only praise my Tetratec filters. Best decision I made. Easiest filter to manage media and works well with my Aquael UV filter. Price not bad either.

utterly irrelevant but being so diversified did not stop them from losing market share and brand loyalty in Japan when their Mitsubishi fuso trucks were killing people in 1990's-2004. The damage to the brand was so vast that the CEO resigned in apology to the victims and resulted in government arrests and prosecutions. Not being so diversified might have meant they would have noticed that the clutches literally came apart on the road and that their quality control people were lieing on testing and clearing since 1998. Diversification does not result in either competence or incompetence.

Why replace it with another filter or buy another head unit: eheim has 3 year warranty have them send you a new one.

Like I said - not sure I can prove date of purchase. Nonetheless, I have written to them via their website.

This is still experience in engineering which has helped them to make the cars. I'm afraid analogies rarely get a point across effectively.

Mushing up fish remains to make fine flakes or granules is barely linked to filters that require some good design to run constantly without fail.

I'm sure they're fine but I like filters with a bit more experience behind them. I don't think it's unreasonable to stick to eheims before running to the tetratecs as eheims are an older company and people have filters still going that are 30+ years old. Tetratecs are so new that although they seems fine at the moment we don't know how long they last.
