I got an Eheim 2217 yesterday, and now need some filter media for it. Would you recommend sponges or the ceramic ball/ring media stuff? I will be running it alongside the current juwel filter til the sponges are good enough to use it as a standalone filter.

Why not whack all of the juwel media in the eheim anyway, and then add some more depending on what's in there.

becuase the juwel sponges are smaller than the eheim canister

Place them dead smack in the middle of the canister and fill the rest in (on the outside of the sponge) with more sponge or filter floss, even ceramic hoops will do nicely.
That would be the best thing to do ideally, saves so much time and effort.

No worries.
I've done it on my 2215.
I used to have an Interpet EPF150, but I got bored with it and changed up. I put all the media in a stocking and placed it smack in the middle, I then placed the sponges (as they are hollow circular) around the outside of the media. Otherway round to what you're doing basically.

ah cool - i wonder if you can help me then - ive got the spray bar itself, but the tap on the end of the hose coming from the canister doesnt attach to the spray bar - im assuming theres supposed to be an attachment of sorts to fit the two together? Ive looked online and it seems theres a sort of l-shaped thing which connects them together, in the installation kit, is that right? is that what i need? (i wonder if i can buy it separately :/ )

You've somewhat lost me there. Have you got double taps?

My filter runs like this.

Canister -> Double tap 1 -> Small amount of tubing -> Double tap 2 -> Tubing into tank -> J Piece (I think that might be your L thing)
I don't use the spray bar.

However, when I did, I'm sure I just popped it in the tubing and make sure it was stable with the J piece and attached a sucker to it.

So yours would be, (I'm assuming with double taps for some reason)

Canister -> Double tap 1 -> Small amount of tubing -> Double tap 2 -> Tubing into tank -> J Piece -> Small amount of tubing -> Spray Bar with end cap. Sucker with clip to hold spray bar up.

If you don't have double taps,

Canister -> Tubing into tank -> J Piece -> Small amount of tubing -> Spray Bar with end cap. Sucker with clip to hold spray bar up.

Edit: Went and looked at my eheim and cleared some things up.

crikey thats confusing

heres mine (excuse the water on the wall, slight accident  )

You load a canister like that one from bottom to top. The water comes in at the bottom. If you have typical needs for filtration you will want to start at the bottom with a mechanical filtration like sponges or even the noodles that Eheim make as a mechanical filter. The next layer up, and much of the total filter volume, will be filled with biological filtration and at the last you place some fine media like filter floss to give the return water a nice clean polish and to keep any particles out of the pumping mechanism. When you are busy loading sponge material, go ahead and use you old sponge as a part of that. It need not cover the entire diameter to be effective in its role of biological filter media. Any old biomedia that you have in the existing filter can go in with the rest of the media that you end up getting. Again it will help give your new filter a good start. Build from bottom to top and you have a fully functional filter that just needs to mature a bit before you try increasing the fish load in the tank.

Thanks mate, always giving me good advice :good:

All i need to do is find out how to attach the spray bar now

Best way is get a shepherds crook attachment .... http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/eheim-shepherds-crook-outlet-pipe-12mm-p-895.html

Output tubing from your filter attaches to the longer end of the crook, which hooks over the side of the tank. Then a short length of tube connects the shepherds crook to your spray bar. Use a suction cup/clip or two to hold the spray bar in position.

Ok - how does the output tubing attach to the crook exactly? is there a connector? The short length of tube i can get when i buy the shepherds crook - does that just push on or does that need a connector? sorry for all the Qs but there's no info on the net about it!!

It'll be just a nice tight push-on friction fit with the Eheim tubing. Push it on a centimeter or two. Don't worry it won't come apart in a hurry.
