i just managed to grab a eheim filter off my friend for £20. but the stuff inside the cannister looks a bit dodgy, would it be best to replace it? the filter has been sitting in the shed for a good few months.

i want to swap my internal filter for this external one as the one im currently running is rubbish!

anyone got any ideas of how to go about doing all of this? any help would be appreciated :)

Which filter and dodgy in what way?

Some foam can degrade if stored badly, the ceramics should do fine after a good wash.

It's the 2213, I've put some pics below of the stuff inside the canister. The white net stuff looks ok just a bit dirty but the other stuff ( looks like something in a pair of tights lol) looks like it needs replacing

OK, I have a 2213, it's a nice little filter.

Not really sure what media that is from the picture. What's in the bag? From the colour it looks like carbon at the moment, but it could just be very dirty. If it's carbon, throw it away.

Is that white thing a foam pad?

I've variously filled 2213's with alfagrog or just cut up rings of pond foam (you can get packs on ebay for sensible prices and cut rings out of them and stack them coarse in the bottom to fine in the top).

I think it is carbon in the bag. The white thing looks like a scratchy pad that you do the washing up with lol. I've seen you can buy filter sets for the filter online, would that be worth it? Or is it just the same as how you fill yours?

You can get cheap replacement media, I'd wash and reuse the ceramic then get some pond filter media and cut it to shape, some above and some below the ceramic. The carbon is your choice but not completely necessary. Plus then you need to cram in all your old media too.

Personally I'd throw away the carbon and white filter pad. Give the filter a good clean up buy the blue sponges for the 2213. If yours has ceramics give them a good wash as suggested and use them. As DrRob says you could fill it with anything really. Put the media in from your internal filter and away you go.
