Hey

I have had an Eheim class in place for 4-5 months. What kind of maintanance should be done and how often?

Thanks

This totally depends on your tank and tank stock. It doesn't really matter on the brand of filter. The media should be washed only in tank water gently to take out the dirty bits and don't overclean it all at once.

How often should it be washed?

With my Eheim I clean inside contents about every 4 months.  I don't use discarded tank water to soak media in but I do use prime in the water I soak media in.  I have never had an ammonia or nitrite spike after doing things this way.

As I said, it depends on your tank. Some may wash it once a week, some once in a few months. Your tank will get covered in algae and gunk pretty quickly when the filter is clogged, the flow may drop depending on model and media. So generally once a month is ok, but some may go longer with no maintenance, some need more often. If you don't mind cleaning the filter, do it as often as you like as long as you don't use non-dechlorinated tap water. You can change the floss part every so often when it looks beyond washing and has gotten slimy and clogged but don't change the bio-media or sponges. They should last years.
