Having been away from Marines for 10 years I was recently given an Eheim 2227, which I thought would be ideal for a new tank (160 litre, T5 Luminaire).
Anybody else using one of these to good effect?
In a nutshell I have been astounded to find how the hobby has moved on from where we were before, all my old books are completely out of date....I like many used to use reverse flow.
Bearing this in mind, would it be better to use the filter not pulsing rather than the intermittent flow around my live rock? Spray bar or venturis?

If you run any exturnal filtration, you must keep it clean to prevent it becomming a nitrate factory. This makes any canisters high-maintanance in most set-up's, though they do offer a back-up and buffer zone to ammonia and nitrite issues :good:

If you run it, you probibly aren't going to have enough flow for a typical reef set-up with it on it's own, so I'd consider a couple of powerheads for the main tank also, say Tunze nanostreams or Koralias :good: Live rock will idealy want more flow also

All the best

Saw the Koralias that many use...two pointing from the ends? Ones or two's for 160 litres?

I work on the saying, "The more the merrier" when it comes to flow. If you want to keep LPS corals I'd get two 1's. For everything else coral wise, get the 2's :hyper:
