Hi all,

A few hours ago I finally got my new tank up and running. I had a few hitches in starting/priming my Eheim 2224 external filter but eventually it was on it's way. However, roughly 5 minutes after having set up the filter, I noticed a substantial leak. It appears to be located between the canister and pump. Has anyone experienced this before? Otherwise, feedback as to how to go about repairing the problem will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Luke.

Start with cleaning the groove in the top part after removing the gasket. Make sure the gasket is in one piece when removing. All it takes is a small piece of debris in the top for the gasket to seal incorrectly, causing a leak.

Next, apply petroleum jelly to the bottom part where the gasket sits, as well as the groove in the top. This helps to preserve the gasket, as well as make for a better seal. Reassemble and fill. If it still leaks it will need a new gasket.

Thank you Tolak, very useful advice. Where am I to find petroleum jelly by any chance? I'll give this a go later on today and hope it'll solve the leak. Failing that, I'll buy a replacement gasket as they're supposedly thicker, presumably making for a better seal.

Thanks again,

Luke.

Most drug stores carry petroleum jelly, here in the US it often goes by the generic trade name of Vaseline, much the same as adhesive bandages are called Band Aids.

To update, I removed the gasket and did a thorough clean of the gasket itself and the groove in which it sits. After this I rubbed petroleum jelly onto the seal and reconnected the whole system. I ran it outside through a bucket of water to discover the leak still prevailed. Just out of curiosity, I ran the filter without the media and baskets in to discover the unit didn't leak. I then put the baskets back inside, swapping their position, to discover the filter ran once more without leaking. It turns out the tube of one of the filter baskets had somehow become slightly bent and so was't fitting all the way inside the upper basket, resulting in a less then satisfactory seal. Anyway, all is now running smoothly and seems fine, despite a small dribble whilst reconnecting my tank. I still have a new gasket on order and will be looking at fitting it as soon as it arrives to see if I can further improve the seal. Otherwise, I have a backup just in case.

Thanks,

Luke.
