Eheim 2213 Questions!

I recently bought a second hand Eheim 2213 filter...It was missing a few parts which i have replaced.. the only thing i have to still get is the media container.. What i want to know is, is it necessary or can i load the filter media straight into the canister!

The 2215 and 2217 don't come with a basket, but they do have two grids. One goes in the bottom before you load the media, and creates about a 1" space at the bottom for water flow. The second goes on the top and serves the same function. I don't think you need the basket, but you do need something that will create these gaps.

Is the blue sponge on the 2213 a solid circle or a circle with a hole in the middle?
