Hi folks, :)

Sorry to "spam" (already posted the question in DIY section) but.......
....where can I get some eggcrate to put at the bottom of my Mbuna tank??

B & Q say they don't do it (which I find quite surprising!) as do Homebase etc.

I live in Chester, England so if anyone knows anywhere nearby I would be eternally grateful (ok, maybe not eternally but grateful all the same!!)

cheers

You can't!!! Or at least not anywhere normal. I gave up on eggcrate and used a flat mat thing that is meant to go on draining boards to help glasses drain. It's the same stuff that washing up bowls, cutlery drainers, plate racks etc are made of. I figured if it was okay to have glasses and dishes on it, and be wet all the time, it was fine to go in my tank.

I got it from my local Wilkinson's cheapo shop - £1.99 a mat - I bought 3 but only needed 2. It's also easy to cut to the right size if you need to. I can't find a pic of it online, but I'll take a pic tonight when I get home and post it.

I actually put it in upside down cos i didn't want the teeny 'feet' to scratch the glass. It's made of hard gloss plastic, semi-rigid, £1.99 a sheet, about 14" x 16". It doesn't grip the surface, but it doesn't need to, it can be cut to size and the rock holds it on place. Put the rock down first then fill in the gravel/sand cos the anti-eggcrate floats - I had loads of fun learning that one!!! (Edit: only relevant to people who already have water in the tank, or in my case the water and the fish!)

Available from Wilkinsons and all good household retailers near you in a variety of delectable colours!!

And if you can't find any near you I'm happy to buy some and post it for y'all!

PS Jimboooooo - you IS the man..... but I is a cheapskate. Yours was like £27!!!!! Yoiks...

you can find egg crate at any home improvements store. it is typically used in a suspended ceiling (ceiling tiles) to put over fluorescent light fixtures. i know this because i work in the lumber/building commodities department at a local home improvement store. it usually comes in 2'x4' pieces which can be easily cut

Abstract - it's not readily available in the UK that we can find. Jimboo did find some but it starts at like $50 because it's not used that much. Lights in suspended ceilings here usually have either chromed reflectors or solid plastic covers, not eggcrate. So i guess if you could send over a containerfull you'd make a lot of money selling it to British fish people!
