I think its literally called egg crate because its a crate, for carrying eggs! I bit like a bread basket I guess :) Its just a plastic crate in a sort of lattice shape.

I can guarantee 100% that it cannot be a crate for carrying eggs.

My wife works for Deans Foods in the largest egg packing centre in Europe (near Lincoln).

I used to work there.

All eggs are packed into their denominations of 6, 10, 12, 15 or 18 and the packed into an outer box. Then the outers stacked on a pallet and sent out to distribution centres.

Only exception is Morrisons who actually use crates similar to milk bottle crates but they are nothing like 'egg crate' that you buy.

As to why it has that name, I have as much idea as you. lol.

Its normally useful for putting on the bottom if you are putting rock structures in an area of the tank, and the 'egg crate' spreads the weight a little and also doesn't let 1 pressure point of a rock crack the glass.

dam it i thought i might have struck it lucky lol ok any one know where to buy if from

I buy mine from a hardware store it is sold in 2'x4' sheets as inserts for flourescent lighting. I use it for tops on tanks with jumpy fish.

I have used it for java moss but found that riccia needs a very tight pattern as it is in such small bits. I use a hairnet to hold it onto rocks and have had great results. It has grown our since I took this pic and covered up virtually all of the netting.
