Hello,

I just bought a Fluval aquarium set that comes with various bits and pieces included. It includes a Fluval 2 Plus internal filter. Is this a decent filter system or am I better getting buying something else? I'm not sure of the advantages of an external filter over an internal one. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Its really not that much to learn. The internal filter has the advantage of being quiet because the water muffles any pumping sounds. If I remember right, it is a simple mechanical filter with enough surface on the media to act as a biological filter. That will serve you well as you establish the biofilter that you need. The canister type filters put less things in the tank so they look a little better while the hang on back filters are a litle easier to clean but they can be noisy because they return the water to the tank with a splashing kind of sound.

External are by far the best because it creates more space in thetank, looks better but you can also get loads of media in them and more like peat wouldn't fit in a 2+, there is nothing wrong with them as i used one but since having an external i have had 3 and no internal except 1 in a new setup while my external was being delivverd.
