Hey all! I just got 4 guppies this week, and 1 had a smaller tail, with some rips in it (I don't know if it was from being in the store, others attacked, or what). I got up this morning and looked at my tank, and he was laying on the bottom :(
Anyone know why he may have died? He seemed fine, just the small tail was the only thing I noticed. and it didnt get worse or anything...

Here is a quick pic... mind the blurriness, took it with my cell phone. But you can see his tail is not as big (long or wide) as most guppies.

Will my other fish in the tank be OK? They don't seem to have any defects or anything, from what I can see...

Thanks in advance!

Depends if your water stats are okay-maybe the fish wasnt well but if the water isnt right maybe the other fish will suffer. Have you tested for ammonia, nitrite etc.?

As above, do you have water test results?

I myself bought 7 guppies a few weeks back, no water problems at all, but all the males died over the course of a week. No symptoms, just woke each day to a dead guppy. They really arent the hardiest of fish are they? On the up side all the females are pregnant and getting ready to drop.

guppies are very weak fish, compared with how they used to be, there is a lot of mixing to get the diffrent strains, hence weakening their immune system, sad but true in afraid

Yes I am cycled. I have been testing every day since I got them. No ammonia, no nitrite, and 5-10ppm nitrates. I just did a water change (I do my weekly change on sat/sun). Maybe I just got a bung fish! :p

OK So I got a replacement guppy (If your fish dies within 5 days, they will give you a new one). And he was laying on the bottom of the tank this morning too! lol ####! The 3 that are alive are from the beginning, I can tell because of the markings on their tails. This new one was very dark blue compared to the others... When I put him in, he would just stay at the top of the tank... When I fed the fish yesterday, he didnt even care, he just sat at the top moving around slowly, and sometimes diving down into the water for a second or 2. This fish stuff can be confusing! lol

I have just posted on the thread about jumbo female guppies, and the same applies to this thread.
Guppies are no longer the hardy little fish they used to be. I believe the inbreeding has weakened their immune system and both male and female of this species now seem to die after a few days in the tank.
The only way I have managed to get Guppies to survive is to purchase a heavily pregnant female, raise the fry myself and them put the youngsters in my large community tank.
Even then, their success rate is poor compared to years ago.

My advice is to give up on the Guppies and go for something hardier. :)
