this guy brought like 4 lil oscars into the store saying that they were perfect and that he was just donating them (figures) the water they came in was like dirt water :( ... well we had a HUGE oscar in the store already that a co-worker couldnt keep anymore ... he got fired :p but yea! the tanks we had them in are the only connected tanks in the whole store (out of like 300 tanks each one has its own filter) but yea to my point the oscars he brought in looked perfect but my baby boy chili got sick from the new fish! after a few days someone came in and bought the tiny oscars but after that... chili got real sick! this morning i went in there to look at him and he has fungus on his forhead! he is swimming lopsided and wont eat! im really worried about him! so i moved him to an isolated quarintine tank in the back so he is in a big ol empty 75G now! i wish judy would let me take a picture but yea she is the boss so i cant defy her! so yea i wanted to know if anyone knew where this went and what is wrong! this fungus looks like a weird burn but there is not heater and the tank he was in is cycled! im pretty mad at that guy for bringing those others in  so can anyone help! im going to go up there 2morrow (even though it is my day off) and help out with him... maybe try to get him to eat! And in a few days im going to buy him a tank and take him home! and try to do what i can!

sorry for the long post i just really want to help this big guy! he is maybe 7inches! big ol boy and i dont want to see him die :(

that's columnaris... They don't usually survive after the fungus looking part hits, but if it's alive tomorrow, treat with antibacterial meds, but his chances are slim.

You need to sterilize the tank he was in and all the tanks his filter was hooked to.

I know that's lots of work, but it has to be done.

Sorry no one answered your post :*) , it happened to me and no one answered until AFTER the poor fish was beyond helping.

I hth!

maybe you want to print this for proof? And a pic (if it's still alive) would be helpful in diagnosis. I am VERY positive that's what it is, but a pic would just confirm it. It sounds like columnaris b/c of the side ways swimming after only a day of a fungus.

Does it appear as a fuzzy like substance? If it is, then that's it no doubt.

yea it almost looks like fuzzy ringworm on his face :( but it has a fuzzy white middle so it isnt ringworm (i have had it before ugh it sucks)

pic isn't needed then. Its columnaris. He prolly won't still be alive tomorrow. Sorry for the bad news.

Just to tell you.
  1. You can't dispose of the body by flushing, burrying or anything like that.
  2. you have to burn it if you can, or seal him up good andburry him. He has to be sealed in something an animal can't get into.

EDIT: meye speeling sux

thank you very much but im going to call in tomorrow and ask about his condish! and if he is dead i will just cry all day cause he was my baby :( had him in there for like 4 months i got so attached to him! well if he is alive can i still treat him?! i would like to save him and let him live with me and wake up to me everymornin ready to be loved on! and if he isnt alive i will just get my 55 gallon and buy another chilli *sighs* :-(

well, if he's still alive and acts like he's in no pain, then yes you can treat him. BUT if he is lying around, upside down, or floating side ways, anything out of the ordinary, you need to euthanize him.

i cannot do that! i couldnt hurt any living creature weither he is in pain or not :( dont tell me that!

well, maybe you should ask someone else to do it...

I was told that they suffer when they have this bacterial infection and that if they aren't acting okay, they need to be put down.

I'm sorry, but you don't want chili to suffer do you?

not but its not cool to do this! he has only been like this for like 3 days :( STUPID OSCARS THAT THAT GUY BROUGHT IN ARGHHHHHH!!!!

No heater?...not sure of the weather there, but prob. a good idea to add one.

Columnaris can start out looking like a fungus, and can develop into an open wound...could this describe your 'burn'?

At any rate, if the skin looks damaged, Melafix could help to heal it. Can be used together w/ Pimafix, which works internally as well...I've had some luck here w/ a pleco refusing to eat.

Columnaris is not necessarily a death sentence. It can attack differently, I'm guessing depending on the strain---sometimes overnight...sometimes slowly.

yes as I said above, if he acts like he's not inpain he'll be fine. But if he acts abnormal, he needs to be put down. I guess you could try treating, but if it doesn't work, then he just suffered. This was what I was told when my guppy got columnaris. He got a small dot at lunch time and by midnight, his whole left side of his head was covered. He became "paralyzed" where his fin, or gills on that side didn;t work. Then he died at midnight the same day! so 12hrs and he was gone.

But yes diff strands can affect diff fish in diff ways. That's why I said if hes okay, the he can be treated. Just thought I'd clarify :)

so, have you heard from him yet? How is 'e?

store opens at 10:30 and its 10:11 so im going to call up there! i cant wait to hear from him! :/ i figured since he is a big ol' sucker he should be fine!...

ps the temp of the room stays at 80F so all the tanks stay at 76F (we have thermometers in all the thanks) his new tank now will most likely get a heater/thermometer thought!

ok the "burn" looking wound looks like this 'o' and fuzzy! its a bunch of odd shaped o's on his face but they are o's exactly maybe ovals!
