Hi, I just used it 2 -3 months ago in my resurected (sp) 38 gal. I have it set to the depths suggested on the package. I added it in as suggested and there was no rinsing / no cloudy water / no fuss. My lighting situation is a bit odd at the moment as I'm still waiting on fw planted bulbs to come in so I'm off on the prefered wattage for a planted tank. The plants I have are doing well however. Unlike sand the fish and food waste does go into the substrate so either vac or have so many plants that will use the waste up... I'm not sure that it is the very best for the new cory cats that I have - not because it is too large but because it is a little on the rough side - wish I know Inchworm's take on this. I don't know how long the bennifits for the planted tank last but in 5/10 years I'll let you know...
I like the look and the plant roots have no problem working their way through it. It you have a plant that you are trying to stick in though that REALLY wants to float it isn't the heavest substrate on the market and some may break free and float. It hasn't knitted tightly at all so there is no real hardness to it. I like it and had no problem with the cycle in this tank as well - added some gravel from an older tank in a panty hose for 1 1/2 months and never had spikes of ammonia or nitrite. Dosen't change the ph as both this tank and the one with sand on the bottom read the same.. Anything else you want to know? :)

The stuff is supposed to be great. I have not yet used it personally but have several friends who swear by it. It would be extremely hard if not impossible to diy a type of your own. Here is a link to the makers website that explains it some.

buggyboutbettas, just use profile, or some kind of aquatic soil from a home depot or garden center, it works great. Anything that doesn't say "for aquarium" will be about 1/5 the price, hence, you won't be robbed for nothing B)

have you tried it yourself konrad? if you are telling me this first-hand then I'm all for it!
tried it, using it, and been very successful. It completely inert and doesn't cloud water at all. I bought mine for about $8 canadian for 10kg! The gravel is brown and very fine so plants don't de-root. HTH! :)
