Just bought an Eheim 2013 fairly cheap on ebay - £16 plus shipping. It was described as "Great condition appears to be hardly used", not that I expected it to be mint condition. The pic of it looked fine.

Anyway, it arrived today, nice and quick which was cool. Opened up the box (very well packed) and inspected my purchase. Unfortunately I found that the inlet (I think - bottom of canister) had a good helping of silicone sealant around it :( So now I'm not sure if this thing is going to flood my living room, or even if the guy used aquarium safe silicone?

Assuming he used standard clear silicone sealant, will this cause any problems? Its not a massive amount, but I'm concerned.

Anyhow, I sent him an email expressing (politely) my concerns. We'll see what he says I guess :|

This happen to anyone else?

test it out by putting it in your bath and hooking up the inlet and outlets to a bucket of water also in the bath. then you'll see if it leaks :good:

Nice phrase however it's not applicable when purchasing off ebay....if your buying a car then yes it applies. However if your buying off ebay it's up to the seller the describe the item as it is.

I dissagree it is applicable in any transaction you take in life, reguardless of where that transaction is.
however Caveat venditor should apply to the same transaction as well.

I would simply take this up with the seller and ask for a full refund. If he disagrees, take photos and open a dispute with eBay.
I've had a couple of potential dodgy buys on eBay, but swifty received full refunds and in both cases were told to just keep the faulty items and not bother sending it back.
So just deal politely with the seller and see how you can resolve it.

I'm not really too bothered if its safe to use I guess. But it may just be easier to go for a refund and be done with it.

Its not like I'm out of pocket by too much as it stands...

No one likes to buy something that was not as described. And that sounds like something pretty major to me. Even though all might be fine.
I would absolutely not take the chance. Not when it involves a filter and lots of water

What exactly is wrong with it? Even if it's cracked or whatever it shouldn't be too difficult to replace, Eheim always has all spare parts to their filters on sale.

Unless I'm wrong, by the sounds of it, the cannister itself. Not just a part.

personnaly i would kick off big time its not been described right he had an obligation to tell u what u were getting its obvioulsy been broken or something at one time or another! neg feedback if i was you!

There's spare parts available for *every* part of the filter :p Even a new cannister.
Yes, but for the actual canister I wouldn't think this it's worth it. Besides - it still boils down to misrepresentation and if the OP had known, might not have bought it. This is wasting time and money and I'd be most annoyed if this happened to me.

That's a tad hasty without first communicating with the seller. Nothing gets resolved with anger.

The fault should have been described in the description.

I nearly bid in that filter but was put off by the silly high postage costs. I hope you get your refund. You can claim a refund from Paypal if you get no joy with the vendor, or at least a refund for the the cost of the new canister part.

A replacement canister for this model is something like £25! Thats more than I feel its worth. Plus, in hind sight, this doesn't have one set of taps, or the inlet or outlet attachments for the tank etc. I didn't think it would be a prob but its more cost at the end of the day.

I had a reply earlier which was nice. Basically the seller claims to be selling for friend and they'd assumed that it was supposed to be sealed in this way. But they have said I could return it if I wanted.

I think I'm going too. Especially after finding an Eheim classic 2213 for sale new for £35 online (£39 inc shipping). I just need to sort out the details with the seller. Hopefully they'll refund my postage, but I'd be willing to go halves (I'm too generous ;))
