I am thinking of building a wormery for my lima's etc etc.

It has to be the most nutricious food you can give your fish, nice and fresh.
I have a mate who's garden soil is so rich he does not need one. He does not use any pesticide so no problem.
Their waste is not the best i know but fed on odd occasion with frozen bloodworm can't be bad.

Or can it?

I used to feed them to my dwarf frog and peacock spiny eel when I had them. If the frog wasn't quick enough, the guppies would fight over it! I would have to find really small ones though, or cut up the slightly larger ones.

I'd leave them in a small amount of water for a while to expel all the gunk they have inside. You need to put something over the top though as they can escape a tall sided container! I still feed them to the other fish, chopped up, occassionally in the warmer weather. This time of year, I can never find any, so a wormery would be a good idea. :good:

Would earthworms be okay to feed to other fish like swords, platys, and gouramis?

I either feed mine live or i pour boiling water on them that kills them instantly, this also gets any slime of them, i then chop them up .
You will never get all the crap out of them because if you leave them to soak for too lomg they loose their freshness.
If you think Bloodworm from the freezer gets them in a frenzy then chopped worm fresh gets them going 'Potty' :hyper:

All fish go for it, guppy's swordtails you name it...everything.
It is after all the most natural bait you can give them and probably the most commomist one they eat in the wild.

I think there is a Protein worry though as fed too much can cause over-weight but then have you seen whats in catfish pellets!!!

And then you have cost......Not much is it.
Perhaps apart from the waste and protein issue and offcoarse making sure no weedkiller etc has been used someone might come up with a problem in which i am all ears but until then i think its the best occasional food you can give them

Great! Earthworms are super cheap and easy to get where I live! Can't wait to see what happens when I feed them.

Has anyone ever tried flatworms?
You can find them just about anywhere in rivers, and they can survive in both cold and warmwater.
Seeing as though they live in the gravel it gives the fish something to hunt (Especially flying foxes, mine loves digging for them)
and the worms colonise, eating the fish waste and they do not harm the fish.

P.S. ever seen a tetra/guppy etc try and eat a whole bloodworm? they swim round for ages with this worm sticking oput their mouths. lol.

Ooh! Flatworms sound awesome! Wish I could find some around here. They could really help clean my tank and feed my fish at the same time! I don't suppose earthworms or bloodworms do that?
