Alright, a rundown on my sick swordtail. She had Ich 4 weeks ago. I treated the tank. She developed Columnaris 2.5 weeks ago. Was late on treatment. Treated, only to find the medication was expired. did several water changes and waited to see if the treatment would still work. Now shes got her fins clamped and is sitting on the bottom of the tank kind of flailing a bit. None of the other fish in the tank are ill. Whats happening? Should I just prepare to lose her?

Can you post water stats please in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Has the columnaris cleared up?
Does she look pale or darker in colour.
Is she resting on her side?
What does it look like when she goes to the toilet?
Does she look bloated, or thin?
Is he tummy sunken in?
Is the fish show signs of laboured breathing?
Any signs of red streaking, fins, body?

Can you post water stats please in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph. I cant find a liquid kit in town, BOTH Lfs have them on back order.

Has the columnaris cleared up? Doesnt appear so, she still has the ring around her "neck" and the lfs hasnt received any new non-expired meds yet
Does she look pale or darker in colour. Paler around the ring (like its bigger?) and darker on the rest of her body (only a shade darker orange)
Is she resting on her side? no, upright
What does it look like when she goes to the toilet? Not sure
Does she look bloated, or thin? a little thinner overall than normal
Is he tummy sunken in? no
Is the fish show signs of laboured breathing? Not that i have seen
Any signs of red streaking, fins, body? No

The ring around her neck does it look like bleaching beneath the skin, fluffy cotton wool, any pink, red, brown area's to the ring around the neck.

You need to find a med fast as columnaris can be a fast killer. A bad strain can wipe a tank out in less than 24 hours.
No signs of columnaris on your other fish?
What was the brand name of the medication you used which had expired?
What was the expiry date on the medication?

You could preform a salt bath on her till you get a medication.

A link to columnaris

The ring is like white scales, no fluff, no red, no brown.

No disease on any of the others, They didnt even get the ich in the tank
the columnaris has been on her for 2 weeks now (since one week after the ich treatment)

Med was Maracyn plus
expired April of 2011 (was shocked that it was that far gone)

I did get some aquarium salt, but will it injure my syno and plecs?

Did the medication knock your water stats?

I would not add the salt to the tank with having syno, plecs.

Just preform a salt bath on the fish.
Just take some tank water. Add the correct amount of salt.
10 minutes for the 1st bath, gradually increasing the time to half an hour.

The medication probably did knock them, hence the water changes to make the strip tests not pink. I have another change tonight. How do I isolate her for the salt bath when i dont have a tank for her?

The salt bath is just a few mintutes thing, depending on the salt concentration, then the fish goes back to her own tank so any container you use for fish will do.

How is the fish?
Have you preformed the salt baths?

Is it possible to order a medication online?

I went to work last night and this morning got her in a salt bath, how often is safe for her to be in one? I can try ordering online, but everything says it cant ship to me (like the water test kits)so i dont know how fast i can get it.

She seems a little more active after 10m salt

I would preform 3 salt baths a day.
One tablespoon of salt to 1 gallon of water.
15 - 30 minutes in the salt bath.
check temp of salt water bath. If it more than 2 degrees lower than tank temp, you will have to keep adding tank water till you match temp of tank.

alright. also, did another 50% water change just now (ran out of time before work last night.) I took out all my decor (plastic plants and plastic log) and ran my hand thru the sand, and out floated a half decomposed fish. when i got the tank back from my friend a month ago, I was missing my male redwag sword and my red platy. not sure which one i found... could that be what is causing all the illness for my girl?

It wouldn't of helped. Water quality, fish pecking at a dead body can cause illness.
:rip:

I would also do a sand vac, and water change tomorrow.

Can you keep the thread updated on her progress. That's if you don't mind.

Good Luck.
