alright well im not sure if this belong here but i got a question.

In my tank i got quite of bit of platy fish.. bout 7 and they reproduced.. there like 10-12 in there now and i got a couple neon tetras and 1 pleco.

one of the platy just alwas lies on the bottom of the fish tank and doesnt really move much , so when i first saw him like that i though for sure hes gonna die soon but like 1-2 weeks passed and hes still doing the exact same thing. I though maybe he might be pregnant like some of the others but he doesnt look pregant or big. Its like when i tap on the glass beside him hes struggling to swim up like the other fish.. he just used all his energy to swim but then just falls to the bottom , do you think maybe 1 of his fins go cut or something that preventing him to swim frealy like the other fish?

if its a fin problem or something will it grow back or not?

Is he/she male or female, i think Platies are fairly easy to sex?
The most likely culprit would be some sort of injury or maybe a bacterial illness...

Could you check the fish and see if there is any scale loss or damage to the fins, it should be fairly obvious, then again most fish can swim quite easily, even with serious physical injury, so if it was due to an injury it would probably be the stress making him act like this....

Does he/she often get chased by any of your fish?
Have you got a quarantine tank?

honestly im not really sure if he is male or female.. thinking it might be a male but the only one im sure is a male is a platy that has a REALLY red tale.

There is no scale loss but to me his top fin seems to be ALOT smaller then the other fish , also his bottom fin seems to be smaller. I am thinking its an injury because when its feeding time he struggles to swim all the way up and takes a couple flakes then just sinks to the bottom

The male fish with a red tale chases fishes sometimes but mostly fish that are on top of the tank , as ive been looking at the tank i dont notice him being chased at all

No i do not have a quarantine tank but someone is giving me a 30 gallon tank for free so i might use that one as a tank

ok well first these are pictures that will help you sex your platy...

hopefully those help. :good:

well does he stay at the bottom all the time or only when it starts to get dark out. becuase for some reason only one of my platy seems to know that when it gets dark out it means sleep time. and so he will stay at the bottom of the tank and wont swim around. he just kinda lies there on the gravel.

but here is a site that if you see anything that looks like something like this or sounds like your fish do some research and let some one know. because some one on here might know a little bit more of the subject.

hope i helped

could be swim bladder ? Is he/she eating / swimming around the tank much ? Does it sink quickly ?
Try feeding it on some vegetables. Stick a pea in boiling water for a minute, take it out, pop the 2 halves out the shell, pulp them a bit in your fingers and drop them into the tank. Or use some small bits of brocolli.

Veg never does them any harm and IF it is early swim bladder, it might help.
