I hope you can help! Thanks.

Tank size: 120 litres, planted, 3.5 months old
pH: 7.0
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: <5
kH:
gH:
tank temp: 25C/77F
These were taken with a master test kit at the LFS.

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):
Three of six guppies have died in the last month. 2 found floating in weeds, 1 never discovered. Another one is now sick. It's lying on the substrate most of the time, gasping, then suddenly spinning around in spiralling circles. I have uploaded a short video of it here:

I also had 2 male platys, one died due I think to being chased incessantly by the other.. the other I returned to the LFS. One of those had some sort of white fluffy stuff on its side for a while, which I believe it tried to scratch on the filter.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 25% weekly

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Easycarbo, 2.5ml daily, Nutrafin Aquaplus Water Conditioner on water changes.

Tank inhabitants: 3 male guppies (was 6), 4 black neon tetras, 6 zebra danios, 2 kuhli loach, 1 hillstream loach, 2 dwarf african frogs, 1 amano shrimp, 1 cherry shrimp.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): none

Exposure to chemicals: none

Quick update: I have put the sick guppy into a bowl in some aquarium water as it seemed to be getting further stressed by the attention from the other fish.. but I have no heater or filter for that bowl and am instead trying to keep the conditions stable by mini water changes.. still swimming around in crazy circles, sort of chasing his tale.

would love any ideas

How about that white fluffy stuff you talked about? All you readings look really great to me.

Do you think you have ick in the tank?

Thanks for replying.

I don't know- I can't see any spots on the the sick guppy - is ich always visible though?

My thought was some sort of internal parasite - might make sense of the crazy spiral swimming? But it's guesswork really.

I should have mentioned in my original post that I had the tank 2 degrees warmer until the latest fish got sick, though I'm not sure if that makes any difference.

What do you think I should do with the sick fish / the rest of the tank?

Wow, without any visible manifestations on your fish, or indicative problems with your readings, it's really a shot in the dark.

I've never heard or seen symptoms like you're getting.

You could treat for ick.

Do you know if your water is hard or soft? I understand guppies like it relatively on the hard side.

You could also treat the sick guppy by adding a pinch of salt to his sick tank.

Be careful though, If you have live plants though, they do not like salt.

I had to use a strip test (JBL Easytest) to test hardness, and roughly speaking I got:
GH: around 10-14dGH (I do live in a hard water area).
KH: around 6dKH

OH, and yes, I have added some salt to the bowl this morning! Thanks - he's still hanging in there...

Try googling gill flukes, I've not dealt with that myself but it can cause some strange swimming and whirling/spinning.

Just wanted to add that whirling disease is another possibility.

I saw gill flukes mentioned elsewhere in relation to weird swimming and wondered about that.. though it doesn't seem to be trying to scratch up against anything..

I hadn't seen whirling disease before - but having looked at some other youtube videos of people who think their fish to have whirling disease, it looks just the same. But of course I can't be sure those posters were correct in their diagnoses.. Does anyone know if it's likely to be whirling disease as it looks like the best bet so far..?

Sorry to report I elected to put the sick guppy out of its misery.. all it was doing was spiralling around all over the place, eating nothing and losing its colour.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for the other two guppies which seem fine at the moment.. if it is whirling disease, it doesn't ever seem to end well..

thanks for all your help
