What do you guys do when you have a dying fish. I have a dying BGK, obviously it's in pain. Do you put it outta it's misery. I can't just throw it away while it's alive and I can't take it outta the water, that'd be suffication. I can't think of a worse way to die.............well drowning would be worse. Anyway what would you do? Would you just let him go and die naturally?

Any idea why it's dieing? They are pretty tough fish that normally live for years. Is the water quality ok?

If you want to kill it you can put it in a bucket of tank water and freeze it. As the temperature drops the fish goes to sleep and eventually dies.
If you have access to Clove Oil (avaliable from health food shops) you can add a few drops of that to the bucket with the fish and that will make the fish go to sleep, (but it won't kill it). You then put the sleeping fish in the freezer until its frozen.
You can also hit it on the head but that gets a bit messy and isn't as nice.

It has a bad case of ICK. My fish have been dying at the rate of 1 or so per day.

if its got ick then you will probably have to treat the whole tank. as for youthanasia, well thats not something any of us like to do.

You fill a bucket with cold water and add ice cubes till the water is freezing then add the fish.

Having read many ethanasia threads the definitive answer for the quickest, most pain free and humane death is to drop a very heavy object on to it. It's quite messy and upsetting to do but ultimately results in an instant death. I put a litt bit of water in a freezer bag, add fish, seal then drop a concrete block on to it from about knee height. All the other methods (clove oil, freezing, vodka, boiling water, flushing, leaving out to suffocate) I have read negative comments about that I haven't got time to go through here but feel free to search for yourself. If you can't cope with the squashing method the very cold water method above is probably your next best bet.

:good:

If the fish have ich then try treating with a copper or malachite green based medication. Whitespot is one of the easiest diseases to treat.
Make sure you don't have carbon in the filter because that will absorb the medication and prevent it from working.
Some medications recommend using half strength for scaleless fishes.

To work out the volume of water in the tank
measure Length x Width X Height in cm
divide by 1000
equals volume in litres

When measuring the height, measure from the top of the gravel to the top of the water level. If you have big rocks or driftwood in the tank remove them before measuring the height.

If you get the appropriate medication into the tank chances are the fish will live.
