i will soon be transferring the 4 fish i have in a 5 gallon tank to a large 40 gallon tank.

one of the fish - zebra danion - has turned into a hunchback over the last 3 months and over the last few days is now lying on its side on the tank bottom just breathing slightly - not swimming or eating

is there a humane way of putting an end to his misery or wait until he floats or whatever?

A well written guide on the subject. It's kind of a touchy one, I can't imagine any method being 'easy' for you to do (I havn't had to deal with this situation yet *knock on wood*) and it's fairly controversial as to what is the absolute most humane method. So, I'd suggest reading that through, maybe doing a search for threads on the topic, and then going with what is right for you and your own fish. Sorry about your fishie.
