A few days ago, one of my bettas got what I am pretty sure is fin rot. He is blue, and when I woke up in the morning, it looked like acid or something had begun to eat away at the tips of his fins. Those have since fallen off and the fins are already looking MUCH healthier since i began using the fin rot medicine, but now, he usually just hangs out floating near the top. Every now and then he will swim around at the bottom, but thats only 2-3x a day. He also has almost no appetite. Is this normal for a betta recovering from finrot? Is there anything else I need to be doing?

Do big water changes and start on an internal bacteria meds. So do big water change before first dose and then before you put in subsequent doses. Good luck. If he's at top gasping lower the water level so it's easier for him to get to the top. Some one else may have other ideas but thats what i'd do.

that's jumping to conclusions a bit too quickly though.

First off bettaballin:
What size tank is he kept in?
Is it heated or filtered?
How often do you change the water?
How long have you had him?
What were you treating him with and how long?
Does he appear bloated?
Any problems swimming properly?

I take it as he is very lethargic..? Fin rot medication will not do this to a betta. Usually, they seem to act pretty normal... although they may show signs of stress. Answer those questions so we can properly diagnose what is going on. The more info you can provide, the better ;)

gotta agree with dusky, sometimes bettas can have both finrot and internal bacteria and treating once the fin rot is over is needed for the bacterial as well, i would suggest that even he now looks normal but is not acting normal suggests this highly. dose with meds as dusky said and you will find a vast improvement in a few days or so, remember that he will be weak so live or thawed out frozen food twice a day will boost his immune system and help him, do not over feed him though, take out what he will not eat in 30mins.

Just re-read my post... didn't mean to make it sound like that isn't the problem. It is certainly very likely and I would be treating my betta for internal bacteria immediately.

Would like to know all the variables on this situation though.
