Has anyone else seen these poor fish that have had the dye injected into them? I was shocked to go into my local retailer to find that they had a tank of them. They look hideous I do not know how anyone in they're right mind could go out and purchase these fish as surely it is inhumane to inject a fish with dye.

Unluckily for these fish they are still in quarantine as they have some sort of infection, part of me wishes that they dont survive just so that the people who are in the business of creating these fish don't make any money surely it is just as immoral to inject a fish to make it look nice for the sake of fashion?

Does anyone else out there have any views on this subject your views would be appreciated

I think it is well established that people on fish forums (more thanlikely people who care about their fish) see this as an incredibly disgusting practise.

Personally, I have never seen dyed fish anywhere before, and hope I never do.

When I first heard about it, I thought it was a joke. I was totally mortified to find out this actually did happen.

I first found out about it a few hours before I actually saw them I was randomly trawling through various fish sights and stumbled across it I never thought I would actually see them in my store. I even have a high opinion on this pet store as they do take really good care of the animals unlike some and remove any dead or dying fish as soon as they find them! So it was a real shock when I found these fish in there. If they are still there on my next visit I might confront them about them!

Unfortuantely though these fish which have been in quarantine for at least two weeks have some sort of infestation not sure what it is but it looks like cotton wool balls on they're body!

Yep it's a truly nasty process, which is cruel and completely unethical..

There is a really good article on dyed fish here:

Thanks for that I think I will have to notify the shop about the fish!

I still can't believe that people would spend time and money on colouring a fish just for fashionable retail!

I don't agree with the injecting of the fish to colour them but feeding colour foods is not so bad. Colour food feeding is common place in birdkeeping too, where do you think those pink canaries come from, Pinkville??

I must admit there is nothing wrong with feeding animals stuff that promotes a change in the colour as long as it hasnt been artificially created to do so and isnt causing any damage to the animal! Some male animals do eat a certain type of food to enhance theyre own colour in the wild. But creating an artificial chemical that increases or changes a colour pigment is wrong!

I dont agree with the injecting off colours either, its pretty cruel.

But humans do it to themselves with fake tan and harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. :S

The difference with humans doing fake tan/tattooing/piercing etc is that most have the choice whether or not they want to mutilate theyre bodies! I have seven tattoo's each of which I have elected to have done through choice! Whereas the fish don't have any choice what so ever!

I also wonder how on earth they get the poor fish to stay still long enough to complete the process? I suppose alot of people that buy them will be parents for they're kids or people that are into having the latest fad! A bit like those that bought fish in a cube! I was appalled to see them a few years back and then unfortunately I was bought one by one of my aunts it cost her £20 for two small white cloud mountain minnows, a snail, little bit of plant and gravel in a 3" cube. Unfortunately I couldnt say I don't want it as it as she is one of these that takes offence to everything! After she had gone I released the fish into my aquarium so that they had more room to swim in.

I have dyed tetras that I got from Walmart about two years ago before I knew they were dyed. Even though they are dyed, they are my longest living fish. Of course I cant put the fact that I have dyed fish in my signature because Ill get harrassed beyond believe about it.

If you'd have known they were dyed at the time would you have still bought them though?

personaly i like how the dyed glass fish look. its just real sad how it has to be done so i dont buy em when i see them...........ive only seen them at walmart though and i wont buy from them.
