Dyed Fish

I think all aquatic retailers should notify people about these fish and not sell them at least then there wouldnt be such a market space open for them to be able to torture the fish

I dont agree with the injecting off colours either, its pretty cruel.

But humans do it to themselves with fake tan and harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. :S

the sun rays are natural, and we can choose, also, its not an 80% mortality rate.

Sunbeds are stupid imo though

Tattoos and things aswell though. I know the suns natural but without protection and too much of it it is bad for you. Isn't it?

actually suntans were a bad comparison. Tatoos are a better one.

Most people choose to tattoo themselves........ I personally have seven wouldnt advise people to get one unless they were sure about it....... Plus they can be painful

I dread to think of how much pain it would cause the fish to be injected with dye

Apart from the choice issue, I don't know of anyone who has a large, pencil thick needle beign used to inject dye along their spine under their skin.

I didnt realise it was done around the spine area ouch!!!!! I feel even sorrier for the fish! If the fish are still in the store I will certainly complain when I go back and exchange some other fish that I bought from the sister store!

I'm still shocked over the fact that they do this kind of thing to animals!

Actually if you've ever dared to read Bizzare magazine there are people who enjoy having random large objects protrude from they're skin or be mutilated, there is a guy called lizard man (don't know if you've heard of him and he is tattooed from head to foot and even had his tongue split) I think it is a bit too much but he chose to do it so more fool him!

I certainly would'nt want it happening to me! (tattoos are my choicce but I wouldnt ever hold someone down and do it to them yet alone to another animal)

Surely there is something that can be done to prevent shops from selling these fish and try and put an end to the market...........

you would think so wouldn't you, its not like you see it happening to any other animals

Actually sorry to say this but we do inject animals with ink or even burn them to mark them (cattle branding) We also micro chip animals........ Ok so its not to the same extent as harming these poor fish but in some ways its bad because once again we are inflicting pain on an animal just to identify who it belongs to! (I had my dog micro chipped the poor thing didnt know whether to carry on eating his chew or to yelp so he did a bit of both I felt so guilty)

I think though that we should all try to help and stop these fish being injected just for fashion it is not nice..... Wonder what ever made them come up with the experiment in the first place?

Thanks for that! I so want to stop this from happening I was speaking to my dad about it and he didnt believe me that it actually goes on (and he claims to be an anarchist TuT TUT)

My LFS has 'kaleidoscope gourami'. From what I've read they inject die under individual scales to get the colour effects. Terribly cruel and looks cr*p and artificial. The owner claims that he sources all the fish from Europe and all his fish are natural.. yeah right...

I'm definitely against this kind of practise and avoid buying any fish that has been dyed or artificially coloured if possible.

I've never heard of kaleidoscope gouramis gonna look them up now......

I don't understand why we (humans) have to mutilate/destroy everything we touch...... Oh well that is one thing I will never understand and probably never will at least some of us are against it

Oh my god that is just disgusting I can not believe that people would actually spend time on creating something that hideous all because they can't breed it into them........... Yet along who in they're right minds would want something so (can't even think of a word to go here)..... I think whoever does this to the fish should have it done to themselves to see how they would like to go through the pain all to make someone want to have them..............

I am really starting to hate these people might have to do a massive email round work somehow......

Is there any kind of petition link going round...... I work in a very large puplic sector so it should go round like wild fire!

There ought to be some sort of name and shame retailers selling them. My LFS is very well respected and has a large range of interesting and unusual fish. I can't understand why they'd sell this sort of stuff as well or try and claim that all their fish are natural... actually re-reading it, it says they don't know how the fish are coloured...

This is from the practical fish keeping magazine website:

What are Kalideoscope gouramis?
These fish are the white form of the Giant goramy, Osphronemus goramy, and made their first appearance at the Aquarama trade shown in 2004. They are hand-coloured at over 30 sites on each flank. Some claim that they are individually tatooed, while others (including those who sell them in the shops) claim that they are hand painted.

The fish have recently appeared on sale in Essex. Don't buy them! Besides being a cruel and unneccessary process, the species can reach over 60cm/24" in length. At other locations similarly marked fish have been on sale with words marked on their flanks.
