I went away to school and left my betta fish at home for my mom to take care of. A week later, I came home, and Dwight was REALLY sick. I think he had Dropsy, his scales were sticking out, belly swollen and protruding, laying on the bottom barely moving. I spazzed out and moved him into quarantine, an hour later he was dead. He had been acting weird even before I went away to school, for a few months actually. I didnt want to medicate if I didnt know what was wrong, so I just made sure the tank was clean etc. I have a seperator and a female betta on the other side, they share the same water & conditions and she is fine. She has an odd white patch on both sides, but I treated her with anti fungal and anti bacterial and nothing changed. It doesnt seem to bother her so I've left her alone.

Is there something wrong with my tank? How can I prevent Donna from getting Dropsy too?

EDIT: I dont have a heater, and all I have are those really cheap filters, they are like little cartridges that hook up to an air pump, last about a month then you throw away and get a new one. I started treating the water with aquarium salt, bc I read that is supposed to help them against diseases.

hi, sorry to hear about your fish...
do you have a separate cycled tank that Donna could go in while you clean out the main tank & start it up again? Although she may already have it of course...
if not, do plenty of water changes to water down any bacteria that is still in there & keep a close eye on her!!

Don't throw away your filter! It contained all the bacteria needed for healthy fish. I know the manufacturers tell you to replace them, this is to get money. Just rinse them in old tank water during a water change.

BTW if you stop buying filters, you could save up for a heater :)

So sorry that Dwight died, im sure everyone on here will help you out with donna too.
Rip Dwight. :(

The "odd white patch on both sides" could be columnaris... Off the top of my head I don't know what the treatment is for that, but it can be pretty bad.

Yeah, I treated her with anti-fungal for that and nothing happened. . .I know meds can stress them out though and I had already given her twice the recommended so I just decided to leave it alone. I dont think she even knows they're there she's not acting sick or anything, and eating fine.
