HI, my question is whether a ramshorn snail or trumpet snail that was bred and raised in a tropical community tank where a guppy died of bacterial disease (fin and tail rot, fungus and septicimia) could pass those on to my dwarf puffers. I have read on other forums that snails do not get this disease, but can they carry it? Has anyone had any kind of experience with this? I saw the guppy sick, lying on the bottom of the tank and immediately removed him before he actually died. When I first saw him and removed him, he only had signs of fin and tail rot and had bad fungus on one side fin. The guppies were a new addition to the tank. they had been added only 2 days before (both of my tanks are mature) and the rams had been there from a while back. The guppie that died had also been dropped on the floor in the store when the guy was taking him out of the tank. I bought 5 guppies total and 2 of them (the same color/species as the one that died) are showing very minimal signs of tail rot. They have been separated and are being treated. the other 2 are blue/yellow and seem just fine.

I did not see any rams feeding on the guppie. It died in a separate tank. But since the guppie was on the bottom of the tank where the rams live, could the bacterial infection contaminate the substrate? and if it did could the rams pick it up that way? the fish feces would also be on the bottom. even though rams don't eat feces, is there some way they or the trumpet snails could pick up the bacteria?

^Thanks,

If a fish has seticemia yes it can infect other fish as the bacteria from the fish can enter the tank water.
Plenty of water changes and bacterial med.
As for snails causing the bacterial infection I don't know.
If a fish has a strong immune system it can fight the desease off, if the fish are weak it usually gets them first as there not strong enough to fight the infection off.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I did not specify that the puffers are in a tank of their own cos they don't play well with others. The guppies lived in a separate thank with other tanks mates: 1 molly, 1 bristlenose pleco, 1 japanese algae eating shrimp, 1 rainbow shark, 1 betta and 1 apple snail. So do you think I should treat my whole tank not just the fish that are showing the symptoms?

I just posted a more detailed description of what happened on a separate thread and I asked some different questions. I did not want a super huge post that covered many different topics all in one so I separated my 2 major concerns. Giving the bacteria to the puffers in a separate thank through the snails was one concern which is this post.

The other concern was whether to treat the whole group of fish and trumpet snails and ramshorn snail. Then separate the shrimp and apple snail to do so. That was the other post.

Thanks
